Chapter 20 - The Unseen Shadow

Winter descended upon New York with a biting frost, coating the city in a blanket of pristine white snow that muffled the relentless roar of traffic. I had settled into the rhythm of my new life as a Vanguard partner, my days filled with high-stakes portfolio acquisitions, international conference calls, and quiet evenings in my Tribeca penthouse.

It was a Friday evening, and a heavy snowstorm was battering the city, turning the streets below into a labyrinth of swirling white flurries and amber streetlights. I sat by the floor-to-ceiling windows with a cup of chamomile tea, watching the storm rage outside, feeling a deep, profound sense of peace.

My phone, resting on the coffee table, suddenly lit up.

It wasn't an email notification or a text from Julian. It was a phone call from an unknown, restricted number.

I frowned, setting my tea mug down. I let it ring twice, three times, expecting it to go to voicemail. But the caller persisted, the electronic chime cutting through the quiet hum of the apartment.

Slowly, I reached out and swiped the screen, pressing the phone to my ear.

"Hello?" I asked, my voice completely level.

There was a long pause on the other end of the line. Just the sound of heavy, static-laced breathing and the distant wail of a siren through the blizzard. Then, a low, raspy voice spoke—one I hadn't heard in months, a voice I thought was permanently locked out of my world.

"Claire... please. You have to open the door. We're downstairs in the lobby, and security won't let us up into the building..."

May you like

My breath caught in my throat for a fraction of a second, not out of fear, but out of sheer, cold disbelief. They were here. In New York. In the middle of a blizzard, standing downstairs in my building's lobby.

Before I could answer, a sharp, metallic *click* echoed from the private elevator foyer just outside my penthouse door—followed by the distinct, heavy chime indicating that someone had just bypassed the security override and was ascending directly to my floor.
