Chapter 7 - The Unraveling

The downtown studio apartment smelled of burnt toast, stale vape smoke, and cheap floral air freshener.

Ethan sat on the edge of a sagging futon, holding an ice pack against his forehead. The studio was barely four hundred square feet, located on the noisy third floor of an aging brick building near the elevated train tracks in the West Loop. Outside, the screech of metal wheels against steel rails rattled the windowpanes every eight minutes.

Vanessa stood by the tiny laminate kitchenette, dressed in an oversized gray sweatshirt, her hair thrown into an unwashed, messy bun. She was scrolling furiously on her phone, her face illuminated by the harsh blue light of the screen.

"David Sterling’s executive assistant just blocked my corporate email," Vanessa said, her voice shrill, trembling with manic rage. "They cut my server access, Ethan. *Mine.* I didn't steal one hundred and forty thousand dollars! You did! Why the hell is Compliance freezing my employment portal?"

Ethan groaned, pressing the ice pack deeper into his temple. "Because you were the named beneficiary on the travel vouchers, Vanessa! I told you to keep your mouth shut and let my lawyer handle it!"

"Your lawyer?" Vanessa spun around, slamming her phone down onto the counter. "What lawyer, Ethan? The strip-mall clown you hired off Michigan Avenue who charges four hundred dollars an hour just to tell you that your wife’s trust documents are airtight? You don't have a lawyer! You don't have a job! And you don't have a dime!"

"I have the Cayman account!" Ethan roared, jumping up from the futon, his voice cracking with hysteria. "Six hundred thousand dollars! The moment the wire clears probate—"

"Claire found the Cayman account, you idiot!" Vanessa screamed, marching across the narrow room and shoving Ethan’s shoulder with both hands. "She has the bank statements! My friend in HR told me Marcus Vance submitted the entire disclosure to the Compliance Committee this morning! Harrison & Sterling isn't just firing you, Ethan! They’re filing criminal embezzlement charges with the Cook County State’s Attorney!"

Ethan staggered back against the wall, the ice pack falling from his limp fingers and landing with a wet slap on the linoleum floor.

"Criminal... charges?" Ethan whispered, the blood draining from his face. "No. No, Sterling wouldn't do that. Arthur was a founding partner. The Sterling family wouldn't put an Arthur Montgomery on trial."

"You aren't Arthur!" Vanessa spat, her eyes blazing with pure, unadulterated venom. "You’re an empty, pathetic fraud! You promised me a penthouse at the Waldorf! You promised me private jets, executive status, and a life in the gold coast! You told me your wife was a dowdy, dependent mouse who would roll over and take whatever crumbs you threw at her!"

Vanessa pointed a trembling finger at the door.

"Get out," she hissed.

Ethan blinked, stunned. "What?"

"Get your four cardboard boxes and get the hell out of my apartment," Vanessa said, her chest heaving. "The lease is in my name. I’m meeting with David Sterling’s personal ethics counsel at four o'clock. I’m giving them every text message, every email, and every receipt you ever sent me. I’m saving my own career, Ethan. I’m not going to prison for a pathetic mama's boy who couldn't even keep the deed to his own house."

Ethan lunged forward, grabbing Vanessa’s forearms, his eyes wide and wild with terror. "Vanessa, please! You can't do this! We’re partners! We chose this life together! You said you loved me!"

"I loved the Regional Director of Harrison & Sterling!" Vanessa screamed, ripping her arms from his grasp with ferocious strength. "I loved the man who was supposed to inherit forty million dollars from the Vance & Sterling Family Trust! I don't give a damn about a jobless, disgraced felon who smells like sour bourbon and cheap aftershave! Get out before I call the police and tell them you’re assaulting me!"

She grabbed Ethan’s leather overcoat from the sofa and hurled it into the hallway outside the open door.

Ethan stood frozen in the center of the cramped studio, the harsh autumn draft from the corridor cutting through his thin shirt. He looked at Vanessa—the woman he had chosen over Claire, the woman for whom he had traded seven years of marriage, his family, his dignity, and his father’s legacy.

There was no passion left in her face. No warmth. No admiration.

There was only the cold, transactional disgust of a scavenger who had realized the carcass was picked clean.

Without another word, Ethan turned and walked out into the dimly lit, carpeted hallway.

The heavy hollow-core door slammed shut behind him. The deadbolt clicked into place with a sharp, final snap that sounded horrifyingly familiar.

Down on the street, the Chicago rain had turned into a freezing sleet.

Ethan pulled his coat tightly around his shoulders, standing under the rusted iron awning of the elevated train station. His phone vibrated in his pocket. He pulled it out with trembling fingers, praying it was his mother, praying it was Marcus Vance offering a lifeline.

It was an automated notification from the Cook County Sheriff’s Department:

*NOTICE OF SERVICE: MARITAL DISSOLUTION & EMERGENCY ASSET FREEZE. HEARING DATE: FRIDAY, NOVEMBER 14. PRESIDING: HON. JUDGE BEATRICE THORNE.*

Ethan dropped his phone onto the wet concrete. The screen shattered into a spiderweb of fractured glass, extinguishing the light.
