Chapter 13 - THE INVITATION RETURNED

August slipped into September, bringing the crisp, cool air of early autumn and the golden-brown turning of maple leaves across the suburbs.

The transition in our family dynamic had taken root, growing stronger with every passing week. My mother had embraced her new routine with a humility I hadn't thought possible. She no longer chased the illusion of high-society perfection; instead, she spent her weekends gardening on her apartment’s small balcony and hosting casual Sunday dinners where everyone pitched in with the dishes.

One afternoon, while I was reviewing monthly business accounts in my home office, my phone rang.

It was my mother.

“Hi, Mom,” I answered, leaning back in my chair.

“Hi, Rachel,” she said, her voice bright and cheerful. “I hope I’m not interrupting anything important.”

“Not at all. Just finishing up some paperwork. What’s going on?”

“Well,” she hesitated for a second, a slight tremor of nervous excitement in her voice. “Thanksgiving is coming up in a couple of months. And... well, I know it’s early, but I was thinking about how we want to handle the holidays this year.”

I paused, my pen hovering over the desk. I hadn't even thought about Thanksgiving yet.

“How do you want to handle it, Mom?” I asked carefully.

“I was wondering...” she started, taking a soft breath. “Since my apartment is too small to host everyone comfortably... would you and the kids be willing to host Thanksgiving at your house this year? I would love to bring the turkey, and Melissa said she’d handle the pies, but... I would really love it if we could all celebrate together under your roof.”

A warm, genuine smile spread across my face.

“We would love that, Mom,” I said warmly. “The kids would be thrilled. Noah’s already talking about turkeys.”

“Oh, thank goodness,” Eleanor sighed with audible relief. “And Rachel? Thank you. For everything.”

“You’re welcome, Mom. See you Sunday.”
