Chapter 8 - The Price of Redemption

Anna’s eyes snapped from Vincent to Julian. "What is it?"
Julian was already standing, his jaw tight. "The private preschool in Lincoln Park. Security just reported a perimeter breach. Sophia Carter slipped her bail bond thirty minutes ago with the help of an offshore contact. Her car was just spotted outside Leo’s school."
The world seemed to drop out from beneath Anna’s feet. A primal, suffocating terror ripped through her chest. "Leo!"
She sprang from her seat, but Vincent was already moving.
The sheer speed of his reaction was terrifying. The broken, penitent man vanished in a millisecond, replaced by a ruthless force of nature.
"Marcus!" Vincent roared into his phone as he sprinted toward the street, completely disregarding traffic as he vaulted over a low concrete barrier. "Lincoln Park Academy! Seal every exit! If a single unauthorized vehicle leaves that curb, ram it! I’m five minutes out!"
Anna ran after him, Julian right at her heels.
Vincent didn't wait for a chauffeur. He sprinted to a blacked-out SUV idling at the curb, ripped the driver's door open, shoved his own bodyguard into the passenger seat, and took the wheel.
"Get in!" Vincent roared to Anna.
Anna didn't hesitate. All pride, all grudges, all three years of bitter resentment evaporated under the singular, burning priority of a mother whose child was in danger. She threw herself into the back seat, Julian sliding in beside her as the SUV’s tires shrieked against the asphalt, leaving trails of burning rubber.
Vincent drove like a maniac. He blew through two red lights, swerving through heavy afternoon traffic on Lake Shore Drive with terrifying precision. The speedometer needle climbed past eighty miles per hour.
"Sophia’s passport was flagged," Julian reported, his fingers flying across his phone as he coordinated with Chicago PD. "Her father had an unregistered private helicopter chartered at a private pad near the rail yards. She’s unhinged, Anna. She knows she’s going to federal prison for twenty years. She has nothing left to lose."
Anna gripped the leather seat ahead of her, leaning toward Vincent. "If she touches him, Vincent... if she touches a single hair on his head—"
"She won't," Vincent cut her off, his voice flat, icy, and vibrating with lethal promise. "She won't touch him, Anna. I swear to you on my soul."
*I swear.*
Three years ago, that promise had ended in fire and ash. But as Anna looked at the rigid line of Vincent’s shoulders, at the veins bulging in his neck, she saw a man who would tear the gates of hell off their hinges to keep his word this time.
The SUV screeched to a halt outside the wrought-iron gates of Lincoln Park Academy.
The scene was pure chaos. Sirens wailed in the distance. Teachers were herding crying children back toward the main brick building. Near the east gate, a black sedan was smashed against a stone pillar, having rammed through the inner barrier.
Fifty yards away, near an industrial access alley leading to the adjacent train tracks, stood Sophia.
She was unrecognizable. Her high-end designer clothes were gone, replaced by a rumpled trench coat. Her hair was wild, her eyes frantic and blown wide with mania.
And she was holding Leo by the arm.
The three-year-old was sobbing, pulling desperately against her grip. "Mommy! Mommy!"
"Sophia!" Anna screamed, throwing the SUV door open and sprinting forward.
"Stay back!" Sophia shrieked, pulling a small, silver snub-nosed revolver from her coat pocket. She pointed it directly at Leo’s head. "Stay back or I swear to God I’ll pull the trigger!"
Anna froze instantly, her boots skidding on the pavement. Her hands shot up, her heart stopping entirely. "Sophia, don't. Please. He’s just a baby. He has nothing to do with this. Take me. Take me instead!"
"You ruined my life!" Sophia screamed, her voice cracking into madness. "I had him! Vincent was mine! We were going to be married! You were dead, you miserable bitch! Why couldn't you just stay dead?"
Vincent stepped forward slowly from behind Anna.
He didn't raise his hands. His expression was completely blank, unnervingly calm.
"Sophia," Vincent said softly.
Sophia’s gaze darted to him, the gun trembling violently in her hand. "Vincent... you did this to me! You sent the FBI! You ruined my father! You threw me away like garbage!"
"I did," Vincent admitted, taking a slow, steady step forward. "I did all of it. Anna didn't press the charges. Julian didn't. I did. I destroyed your family because you lied to me. Because you stole three years of my son's life."
"Don't come any closer!" she shrieked, tightening her grip on Leo’s jacket. Leo wailed in terror, his little legs kicking.
"Look at me, Sophia," Vincent commanded, his voice hypnotic, low, and completely focused. "Look at who you hate. You don't care about the boy. He’s useless to you. If you kill him, the police will shoot you where you stand. You won't even make it to the train tracks."
Sophia’s chest heaved. "I don't care anymore! If I can't have my life, you don't get yours!"
"Then take me," Vincent said, stepping directly between Anna and the barrel of the gun. "I’m the one who hurt you. I’m the one who broke every promise I ever made you. Shoot me, Sophia. Let the boy walk to his mother, and you can put every bullet in that cylinder into my chest."
"Vincent, no!" Anna gasped, her heart leaping into her throat.
Vincent didn't flinch. He kept his eyes locked entirely on Sophia, slowly closing the distance. Ten yards. Eight yards.
"You think I won't?" Sophia sobbed, the gun shaking wildly as she aimed it directly at Vincent’s heart. "You think I’m bluffing?"
"I know you're not," Vincent said, his voice dropping into an intimate, steady cadence. "You're angry. You have every right to be. So finish it. Kill the man who betrayed you. Let the child go."
Sophia’s eyes darted from Vincent’s chest to Leo. The boy’s crying was deafening. The manic logic in her shattered brain twisted.
With a sudden, violent shove, she pushed Leo away from her toward the open street.
"Leo!" Anna screamed, lunging forward.
In that fraction of a second, Sophia’s finger tightened on the trigger. Her eyes locked onto Anna, realigning the barrel directly toward Anna’s unprotected chest.
"Die, you bitch!"
*BANG!*
The gunshot roared through the courtyard like a lightning strike.
Anna didn't feel the bullet.
She only felt the massive, crushing impact of Vincent’s body slamming into hers, throwing her hard to the concrete, wrapping himself entirely around her like a suit of living armor.
*BANG!*
A second shot tore through the air.
Vincent grunted—a deep, wet, suffocating sound. His weight became dead against her chest.
Behind them, a sharp crack echoed as a sniper from the tactical unit stationed on the school roof fired. Sophia collapsed backward onto the gravel, motionless.
Anna scrambled up from beneath Vincent, her hands frantically searching him. "Vincent! Vincent!"
He was lying on his side on the pavement. Blood—thick, dark, and arterial—was spreading rapidly across the left side of his charcoal sweater, pooling under his shoulder blade.
"Anna..." Vincent wheezed, blood flecking his lips. His silver-gray eyes were dimming, fighting desperately to stay focused on her face. "Leo... is Leo...?"
Anna looked over her shoulder. Julian had already scooped Leo safely into his arms, shielding the boy’s eyes against his chest.
"He’s safe," Anna cried, tears finally bursting from her eyes as she pressed both hands firmly against the wound in Vincent’s chest, trying desperately to stem the hot rush of blood. "He’s safe, Vincent! Hold on! Julian, call an ambulance! Call them now!"
Vincent managed a ragged, broken smile. His blood-soaked fingers reached up, trembling, and gently brushed against her cheek.
"I didn't... let go this time," he whispered.

His hand slipped from her face, falling heavily to the pavement, and his eyes rolled back into darkness.
