Chapter 19 - The Question on the Ridge

By mid-summer, life at the Carter household had settled into a sweet, rhythmic harmony.

The shop was thriving, Lily was flourishing in school, and the dark shadows of poverty and grief that had haunted Daniel for three long years had finally dissolved like mist in the morning sun.

On a Saturday afternoon in July, Daniel drove Grace and Lily up to Lookout Ridge—a high, grass-covered hill overlooking the entire valley, bathed in the golden light of the late afternoon sun.

They laid out a plaid blanket on the grass. Lily immediately took her bubble wand and began chasing iridescent spheres through the warm breeze, her laughter carrying across the open field.

Daniel sat on the blanket beside Grace, leaning back on one elbow, watching her profile against the horizon. She wore a simple white sundress, her dark hair blowing gently in the wind.

"What are you thinking about?" Grace asked, turning her head to smile at him.

"I'm thinking about how close I came to missing all of this," Daniel said quietly. "If Lily hadn't invited you to dinner... if you hadn't walked through that door..."

"We were always going to find each other, Daniel," Grace said softly, reaching out to trace the crook of his jawline with her thumb. "The storm brought us together seven years ago. Lily just opened the door."

Daniel reached into his jacket pocket. His heart was hammering against his ribs, but this time, it wasn't from fear or financial panic. It was from pure, unadulterated joy.

He pulled out a small, velvet-lined box and opened it.

Inside rested a simple, elegant ring—a brilliant solitaire diamond set in a polished band of white gold, paid for with the hard-earned profits from his newly secured business.

Grace gasped, her hand flying to her mouth, her dark eyes widening with shock and sudden, joyful tears.

"Grace," Daniel said, his voice deep, steady, and filled with a love that had survived the darkest winters of his life. "You brought light back into a house that had been dark for three years. You loved my daughter like your own, and you stood by me when I had nothing to offer but hard work and uncertainty."

He took her trembling hand, sliding the box into her palm.

"Will you marry me? Will you make our family complete?"

From twenty yards away, Lily stopped chasing bubbles. She froze, watching them with wide, hopeful eyes, holding her breath.

Grace looked from the sparkling ring up to Daniel's strong, steady face—the face of the man who had pulled her out of the snow, the man who had fought for his home, the man she loved with every fiber of her soul.

"Yes," Grace choked out through her tears, throwing her arms around his neck. "Yes, Daniel! A thousand times yes!"

Lily let out a loud, triumphant squeal and came barreling across the grass, tackling them both onto the plaid blanket in a flurry of giggles and hugs.

Daniel held them both tight against his chest, laughing out loud into the warm summer sky, his heart full to overflowing.
