Chapter 10 - The Reckoning

The next three months were a whirlwind of legal proceedings, insurance adjusters, and deep healing for our small family.

With Patricia held in county jail pending her felony arraignment, Madison’s legal defense crumbled completely. Without Ethan’s money to pay for high-end attorneys, Madison was forced to accept a public defender.

She pleaded guilty to misdemeanor criminal mischief and was sentenced to two years of probation, 200 hours of community service, and mandatory court-ordered restitution for the damage to our garage.

During her sentencing, Madison sat at the defense table alone. Patricia couldn't help her, and Uncle Mark and Uncle Greg had cut ties with both of them after learning the full truth about the trust fund theft and the ruined house.

Meanwhile, Patricia faced the full weight of the legal system.

Confronted with undeniable video evidence, the protection order violation, and the grand larceny charge for liquidating Lily’s trust, Patricia’s attorney negotiated a plea deal to avoid a lengthy prison sentence.

She pleaded guilty to felony property destruction and grand theft.

The judge sentenced Patricia to three years in a state correctional facility, suspended after twelve months of active incarceration, followed by five years of strict probation. Crucially, the court issued an order of full restitution, seizing Patricia’s remaining personal assets, including her luxury vehicle and jewelry collections, to replenish Lily’s college trust fund and cover the insurance deductible for the house.

On the day she was transported to the regional facility, Ethan and I were required to attend the final asset forfeiture hearing.

Patricia sat in an orange jumpsuit, her hair unstyled, her fake elegance stripped away completely. She looked like an ordinary, bitter old woman who had gambled her family’s love for power and lost everything.

She looked at Ethan from across the table.

“Are you happy now, Ethan?” she asked bitterly. “You destroyed your family.”

Ethan looked at her with pity.

“No, Mom,” Ethan replied softly. “You destroyed your family the moment you thought love was something you could buy, demand, and abuse. I didn't destroy anything. I just stopped protecting you from yourself.”
