Chapter 28 - The Breaking Point

"Is that your big reveal, Vance?" Ethan’s voice cut through the suffocating silence like a razor-sharp blade. He didn't look panicked, nor did he look betrayed. He simply stepped in front of me and Dad, his posture radiating unbreakable strength.
Vance blinked, his triumphant smirk faltering slightly. "What are you talking about? Look at them! The foundation of their entire family is built on fraud and cowardice. They're ruined."
"They were built on secrets," Ethan corrected calmly, stepping closer to Vance until the older man was forced to lean back against the marble counter. "And secrets lose all their power the moment you drag them out into the light. Yes, Edward made mistakes twenty years ago under the thumb of a ruthless, abusive tyrant. Yes, Sarah Vance was a monster who terrorized her own family. But look around, Vance. Edward confessed. He admitted his weakness. He’s spent the last year trying to make things right, helping us rebuild our lives, and standing up to the toxicity that poisoned this family for generations."
Ethan turned his gaze toward me, his eyes softening with fierce, unconditional love. He reached out and gently took my hand, squeezing my fingers tightly. "And Emily? Emily broke the cycle. She walked away from the money, she protected her daughter, and she refused to be blackmailed by parasites like you."
I squeezed his hand back, the paralyzing fog of shock lifting from my mind. Ethan was right. Mom’s empire of fear and manipulation died the moment we refused to play by her rules anymore. Dad’s past mistakes didn't define who he was today—the fact that he owned up to them, right here, right now, proved he had finally found his backbone.
"As for your extortion plot, Mr. Vance," Ethan continued, turning back to the pale, sweating lawyer, "you just handed federal investigators a signed, documented confession of your ongoing attempts to blackmail a private citizen using stolen assets. The injunction is active. The bank vault is sealed. And the FBI has already been notified of your current location."
As if on cue, the heavy glass doors of the bank lobby upstairs echoed with the distinct, heavy thud of approaching combat boots. Within seconds, two men in dark suits flashed federal badges at the security guard, striding purposefully down the stairs toward our group.
"Richard Vance?" one of the federal agents asked, his voice crisp and authoritative as he approached. "You're under arrest for wire fraud, extortion, and interstate financial conspiracy. Turn around and put your hands behind your back."

Vance’s face turned an ugly, mottled crimson. He opened his mouth to protest, but the federal agent didn't give him a chance, swiftly snapping the steel cuffs around his wrists and reading him his rights as they marched him away toward the exit.
As Vance was hauled past us, he shot one last venomous glare in our direction. "This isn't over!" he shouted over his shoulder. "Clara is still out there! She knows everything, and she won't let you win!"
