Chapter 20 - The Unwelcome Shadow

The peace of our summer afternoon was shattered, replaced by an uneasy hum of anxiety that lingered beneath my skin. I tried to shake it off, stepping back out onto the patio to hand Grace a fresh glass of lemonade, forcing a bright, reassuring smile onto my face so she wouldn't see the storm brewing in my eyes. She didn't suspect a thing, wrapped up in the innocent joy of her teenage friendships, and I thanked God for that. She had suffered enough; she deserved a summer of pure, unblemished sunshine.
Three days later, however, the shadow returned—this time, standing right on our front porch.
I was in the middle of preparing dinner when the doorbell rang. It wasn't the polite, rhythmic knock of a neighbor or the cheerful drop-off of a delivery driver. It was a heavy, frantic pounding, desperate and unyielding, rattling the glass panes of our front door. My heart slammed against my ribs. I wiped my hands on a dish towel and walked down the hallway, every step heavy with dread.
When I pulled the door open, the sight waiting for me made my breath catch in my throat.
It was Tyler. But he was unrecognizable. The polished, arrogant teenager who had laughed as he shoved his cousin’s wheelchair was gone. In his place stood a hollow-eyed, disheveled young man wearing a faded hoodie that looked three sizes too big for him. His hair was messy, his face pale, and his hands trembled uncontrollably as he shoved them deep into his pockets.
"Aunt Natalie," he whispered, his voice cracking, entirely devoid of the sneering superiority he used to wear like armor.

I didn't step back, nor did I invite him in. I planted myself firmly in the doorway, blocking the entrance like a fortress wall. "What are you doing here, Tyler?"
"I had nowhere else to go," he choked out, tears suddenly spilling over his lower eyelids, tracking down his hollow cheeks. "Mom... Mom has completely lost it. She spends all day screaming at the walls, drinking until she passes out. The electricity got cut off yesterday. I’m so hungry, Aunt Natalie. Please. Just... please help us."
