Chapter 20 - Whispers of a Counter-Attack

The calm we had fought so hard to build, however, was about to face its first real external test. By late January, the legal fallout from the Sterling estate liquidation had triggered a desperate, coordinated counter-attack from the remnants of Eleanor’s inner circle. Stripped of their financial lifelines, a group of her closest associates and distant relatives, led by Julian and Victoria, realized that if they couldn't reclaim the family fortune, they would try to drag Andrew down with them.

It started with an anonymous tip to the local zoning board regarding William’s newly converted woodworking shop in Bedford, claiming it violated residential business ordinances. Then came a series of vicious, targeted online smear campaigns on local Westchester community forums, attempting to paint Andrew’s corporate firm as corrupt and unethical.

Andrew and I were sitting at our kitchen island late one evening, reviewing documents, when Andrew’s phone buzzed aggressively on the marble countertop. He glanced at the screen, and his jaw tightened instantly.

"What is it?" I asked, setting my pen down.

"It’s from Marcus, my lead attorney," Andrew said, his voice dropping into a cold, tactical register. "Julian and Victoria have pooled what little cash they have left to hire a notorious hit-piece lawyer out of Manhattan. They’re filing a frivolous counter-suit, claiming that William was mentally incompetent when he signed over his share of the family trust to me, and they’re trying to subpoena my company’s financial records."

I felt a cold spike of adrenaline. "Can they do that? William is completely of sound mind!"

"They know he’s of sound mind," Andrew replied, running a hand through his hair in frustration. "This isn't about winning a legal case. It’s a scorched-earth harassment tactic designed to force us into a humiliating public settlement, drain my legal reserves, and create enough smoke to damage my reputation with my corporate partners."

"They are desperate," I said, my voice hardening with protective anger. "They thought they could destroy us at Christmas, and now that their world is collapsing, they're thrashing around like cornered animals."

"More like drowning rats," Andrew corrected coldly. He picked up his phone, dialed a number, and put it on speaker as Marcus answered on the second ring.

"Andrew," Marcus’s voice came through the phone, sharp and professional. "I assume you saw the filing?"

"I did," Andrew said without hesitation. "What’s our counter-strategy, Marcus? I don't want to drag this out in the press. I want to crush this nonsense before it even hits a courtroom judge's desk."

"Glad you said that," Marcus replied, a note of grim satisfaction in his voice. "Because while they were filing their little nuisance suit, my forensic team uncovered something much bigger. It turns out Julian didn't just mismanage his own funds—he embezzled nearly half a million dollars from a charitable foundation Eleanor ran, using forged signatures to pay off his private gambling debts. And guess who co-signed some of those fraudulent wire transfers?"

Andrew raised an eyebrow. "Victoria?"

May you like

"Bingo," Marcus said. "We don't need to defend against their lawsuit, Andrew. We can hand these documents directly to the Manhattan District Attorney's office tomorrow morning. Let’s see how much they want to litigate when they're facing federal wire fraud charges."
