Chapter 18 - The Unwritten Page

Late in August, as the summer heat began to mellow into the golden haze of early autumn, Evan and I sat on our back porch after Lily had gone to sleep.
The house was quiet, save for the rhythmic hum of the crickets in the grass. Evan handed me a mug of herbal tea, sitting down next to me on the wooden bench and pulling me close against his side.
"Can you believe she’s almost walking everywhere now?" Evan murmured, looking up at the starlit sky. "It feels like just yesterday we were sitting in the NICU counting drops of milk."
"It feels like a lifetime ago," I agreed, resting my head on his shoulder. "Sometimes I still catch myself checking her clothes, wondering if I’m doing enough, if she’s growing fast enough."
"And what happens when you catch yourself?"
I smiled into the darkness. "I remember her pediatrician saying she’s following her own curve. And I remember that I don't have to carry my mother’s voice anymore."
We sat in comfortable silence for a long time, watching the shadows shift across the lawn.
My phone buzzed on the wooden table between us. I glanced down. It was a text from my mother:“Found some old baby photos of you while cleaning out the attic. You were just as stubborn and joyful at one year old as Lily is now. Love you both.”
I didn't feel a spike of anxiety. I didn't feel the urge to overanalyze every word. I simply smiled, typed back a quick reply with a heart emoji, and set the phone face down.

The story of my life wasn't a script written by Carol anymore. The past had shaped us, the NICU had tested us, and the winter had tried to break us—but we had rewritten the ending ourselves.
And the best chapters were still waiting to be written.
