Chapter 2 - The Silent Room

The screech of audio feedback pierced the room, causing several guests to wince and cover their ears. The lively pop music cut to dead silence.

Every single head in the Lakeside Pavilion swung toward me. Parents, toddlers, the venue staff, and the two corporate executives from Bellamy Events all stared in shock.

I took a deep breath, holding the microphone firmly against my chin.

“Before anyone takes another bite of food,” I announced, my voice echoing loudly off every wall, “I need to make a quick announcement. This is not the party I paid $2,500 for. My sister-in-law, Melissa, used my daughter’s birthday money to throw a private business tasting for her corporate portfolio—and then banned the birthday girl from touching a single piece of food on that table.”

Gasps rippled through the audience. Several parents who had been handing cookies to their toddlers paused mid-motion.

Melissa’s face turned bright, splotchy red. The professional composure vanished instantly. She lunged across the floor toward the DJ stage, her heels clicking aggressively.

“Sarah! Turn that off! Give me that right now!” she hissed, reaching out to snatch the microphone from my hand.

I calmly took two steps backward, ducking behind the heavy speaker stand.

“You also promised in writing that this entire setup would be 100% peanut-free,” I continued into the microphone, my eyes locked on the two executives from Bellamy Events, who were now watching with wide, horrified eyes. “Yet she just admitted to me that every single item on that display contains severe nut contaminants. Until we verify what was actually brought into this building, I strongly advise every parent in this room to stop their children from eating immediately.”

Panicked murmurs filled the room. Parents immediately started snatching cupcakes and chocolate-covered strawberries out of their children's hands. One mother began frantically wiping her son's mouth with a napkin.

“She’s lying! She’s hysterically lying!” Melissa screeched, turning to face the crowd while trying desperately to save face. “It’s just a miscommunication! The food is fine!”

Before I could speak again, the double doors leading to the commercial kitchen slammed open so hard they bounced off the drywall.

A young kitchen assistant in a grease-stained white apron burst into the room. His chef’s hat was tilted, sweat pouring down his forehead, and his eyes were wide with sheer terror. In his trembling hands, he was clutching a yellow clip-board holding a thick stack of raw ingredient inventory sheets.

“Ma’am!” he shouted, his voice cracking violently across the dead-silent room. He sprinted toward the center of the pavilion, looking around at the children in horror. “Stop them! Stop them right now!”

The crowd gasped. Melissa froze in her tracks, her jaw slackening.

“What are you doing? Get back in the kitchen!” Melissa barked, trying to step in front of him.

The young assistant completely ignored her. He ran straight up to me and the microphone, gasping for air as if he had just run a marathon.

“Someone switched the allergy control labels in the cold storage half an hour ago,” the boy gasped directly into the live mic. “The batch of dark chocolate dip used for the fountains—it’s pure peanut oil base! And the bakery box labeled ‘Nut-Free Vanilla’ was swapped with peanut-butter praline crisp! Kids have already been eating it!”

A collective scream erupted from the back of the room.
