Chapter 2 - The Unraveling

The silence in Aunt Linda’s backyard was absolute. Even the birds in the maple trees seemed to stop chirping.
Richard frowned, looking down at my phone screen in confusion. "Emily, what is the meaning of this childish drama? Put that away right now."
"Read the screen, Dad," I said quietly, my voice devoid of emotion. "Or better yet, listen."
I hit the speaker button. A clear, crisp audio file began playing over the silence.
"He’s an idiot, Mark. He thinks I actually love his boring suburban lifestyle," Vanessa’s voice boomed out from the phone speaker. "I’m just waiting for the ink to dry on the revised trust fund. Once Richard transfers the deed of the lake house into my name, I’m filing for divorce and draining the secondary investment accounts. He won't even see it coming."
Gasps rippled through the crowd. Aunt Linda covered her mouth with both hands. Uncle Dan dropped his plastic fork onto his plate.
"That... that’s a fake!" Vanessa shrieked, her voice cracking as her pale skin turned a blotchy, panicked red. "Richard, don't listen to her! She used AI! People manufacture fake audio all the time now to ruin marriages!"
"Is this fake too, Vanessa?" I swiped to the next slide on the screen, showing a high-resolution photograph.
It showed Vanessa sitting inside an upscale restaurant in downtown Cleveland, holding hands with a silver-haired man in a tailored suit—Marcus Vance, a infamous real estate developer currently under federal investigation for bank fraud.
"Who is Marcus Vance, Vanessa?" I asked loudly, turning so the entire family could hear. "And why have you transferred $140,000 from Dad’s business operating account into a shell corporation registered in the Cayman Islands under Marcus’s name over the past ninety days?"
Richard’s face drained of color. He looked from the phone screen to Vanessa, his lower lip trembling. "Vanessa... what is she talking about? What $140,000?"
"She's lying! She’s crazy! She’s jealous because you love Brittany more than her!" Vanessa screamed, reaching out frantically to grab Richard’s arm. But for the first time in two years, Richard pulled his arm away from her touch.
Brittany stepped forward, her eyes wide with rage. "You bitter little brat! How dare you ruin my mother’s reputation at a family event!"
"Brittany, sit down," I snapped, turning my gaze to her. "Or should I pull up your fake business credentials too? The ones you used to get Richard to fund your failed 'fashion boutique' that was actually just paying off your credit card debt from luxury shopping sprees in Chicago?"
Brittany choked on her breath, stepping back into the shadow of the deck umbrella.
Nana Rose pushed the wheels of her chair forward, her aged eyes sharp and clear. "Richard," she commanded in a firm voice. "Look at the papers. Is Emily telling the truth?"
Richard snatched the phone from my hand. He began rapidly scrolling through the PDF bank ledgers, tax filings, and legal affidavits I had prepared. My private investigator hadn't just found gossip; he had uncovered a paper trail of systematic financial fraud.
Vanessa had been systematically siphoning money out of Lawson Logistics—the family business my mother and father had built together over thirty years—and transferring it into untraceable offshore accounts.
"You... you lied to me," Richard whispered, his eyes wide with horror as he looked at Vanessa. "You told me those transactions were for corporate tax shelters..."
"Richard, baby, let me explain!" Vanessa begged, tears finally welling in her eyes—not out of remorse, but out of absolute panic. "She’s manipulating the numbers! She hates me!"
"I don't hate you, Vanessa," I said calmly, taking my phone back from my father's shaking hands. "I just protect what’s mine. And more importantly, I protect my mother’s legacy."
I looked at my father, whose face was now a mask of utter humiliation and heartbreak. The man who had just publicly called me a "mistake" was now standing stripped of his pride in front of forty family members.

"I’m leaving now," I announced to the yard. "The police and the forensic accounting firm will be arriving at Lawson Logistics headquarters tomorrow morning at 8:00 AM. I suggest you get a good lawyer, Vanessa."
I turned on my heel and walked toward my car. Behind me, chaotic screaming broke out on the deck.
