Chapter 11 - THE LAVENDER EAR

Claire pulled out the small piece of yellowed paper. It was dry, completely untouched by the floodwater.
With trembling fingers, she unfolded it.
Inside was a handwritten note, written in neat, clear adult penmanship that Claire recognized instantly. It was Ethan’s handwriting.
“My dearest Claire and my brave little Lily,
If you are reading this, it means the sun has come up, the storm is over, and my sweet girl is safe.
Please do not spend your lives grieving for me. For thirty years, I lived on a borrowed heart, carrying a shadow I didn't understand. Yesterday, I was given a choice: to run and lose everything, or to stay and fix what was broken.
I didn't drown in the dark, Claire. I went to take my sister home.
Rebecca and I are together now, where the water cannot reach us. We are at peace. The debt of our family is paid in full, forever.
Live your life, Claire. Raise our daughter to be strong, kind, and brave. Love her enough for both of us.
Whenever you see a flash of lightning or hear rain on the window, know that I am watching over you both, keeping you safe.
With all my love, forever,Ethan.”
Claire held the note to her chest, closing her eyes as tears spilled over her cheeks—not tears of pure agony anymore, but tears of deep, healing love and closure.
She opened her eyes and looked at Lily’s stuffed rabbit.
Then she gasped softly.
The toy rabbit—the one Lily had held throughout the entire nightmare—was changed.
The single lavender ear was no longer lavender.
It had turned pure, snowy white, matching the rest of the toy completely.
"Mommy," Lily whispered, wrapping her small hand around Claire’s fingers as the rescue boat glided across the calm, receding water toward the bright, sunlit horizon. "Daddy said he loves us."
Claire pulled her daughter close, kissing the top of her head, feeling the warmth of the morning sun against her face.

"I know, baby," Claire smiled through her tears, looking up at the clear blue sky above. "I know."
