Chapter 8 - The Hidden Medical File

The air in the conference room was toxic with the stench of Mark’s exposed deceit.

Mark sat with his elbows on the table, his head buried in his hands, his knuckles white. The image of the untouchable corporate powerhouse was completely shattered. He looked small, pathetic, and utterly ruined.

"Richard," Julian continued, his voice ringing with absolute authority. "Let me outline what a trial looks like for your client."

Julian stood up, walking slowly around the perimeter of the glass table.

"Exhibit A: Mark Vance conceals his own medical diagnosis, emotionally abuses his wife for years, and divorces her under the false pretense of female infertility."

"Exhibit B: Three weeks after the dissolution, he engages in sexual relations with my client, walks out the next morning, and explicitly tells her, *'Last night doesn't change anything,'* legally and emotionally severing any ongoing relationship."

"Exhibit C: My client discovers a high-risk twin pregnancy, carries them alone, pays every medical bill alone, and raises two healthy, emotionally secure boys for three years without a single dollar or inquiry from Mark Vance."

Julian stopped right behind Mark’s chair.

"Exhibit D: Four years later, Mark Vance invites my client to his baby shower for the explicit purpose of public psychological torture, handwriting on the invitation: *'Come see what you could never give me.'* A document that demonstrates active, malicious hostility toward the mother of his children."

Julian leaned down slightly, looking at Sterling.

"You want 50/50 custody, Richard? You want to bring this before Judge Henderson in Delaware County? A judge who is famously protective of maternal stability and abhors narcissistic domestic cruelty? By the time I finish cross-examining Mark on the stand, he won't just lose custody—the judge will refer this medical concealment and harassment to the state licensing board for his private equity practice."

Sterling slowly closed his thick binder. He turned to Mark, keeping his voice low, urgent, and blunt.

"Mark. Listen to me very carefully. If we take this to a judge, you will lose. You will lose physical custody, you will lose legal custody, and you will be assessed maximum retroactive child support for the past thirty-six months, plus Claire’s legal fees. And every detail of this medical report will become a matter of public court record. The Columbus Dispatch will have it on the front page of the business section by Thursday."

Mark slowly lifted his head. His eyes were wild, bloodshot, cornered.

"What are my options?" Mark croaked, his voice barely audible.

Julian stepped back to his seat and slid a new document across the table. A settlement agreement.

"Here are our terms," Julian stated. "Non-negotiable."

"One: Sole legal and sole physical custody awarded entirely to Claire Campbell. Mark Vance has zero decision-making authority regarding their education, medical care, or residence."

"Two: Retroactive child support for the past thirty-six months, calculated at the maximum statutory rate based on Mark’s corporate income. A lump sum of three hundred and twenty thousand dollars, to be placed into an irrevocable educational trust for Luke and Owen, managed exclusively by Claire."

"Three: Ongoing monthly child support of six thousand dollars, paid automatically via state garnishment."

Mark flinched at the numbers, but Julian held up a hand, cutting him off before he could speak.

"Four: Visitation. No overnight visits. No unsupervised visits. Mark may have two hours of supervised visitation every other Saturday at a licensed family facility, accompanied by a court-appointed monitor, at his own expense. If he misses two consecutive sessions without medical excuse, visitation is suspended."

"Supervised?!" Mark exploded, lunging forward against the table. "Like I’m a criminal?! Like I’m some kind of deadbeat child abuser?!"

"You abandoned them before they were born, Mark," I spoke up, my voice calm, clear, and cutting through his rage like a scalpel. "You proved to me, to your mother, and to everyone in that ballroom that you do not see these boys as human beings. You see them as extensions of your ego. You will not take my sons to Tartan Fields to parade them around like accessories. If you want to know them, you will earn it. Two hours at a time, under the eyes of a professional who will ensure your poison never touches their minds."

Mark looked at Sterling, desperate for a lifeline. "Richard, tell her she can't do this!"

Sterling looked down at the medical report, then back at Mark. "Mark... sign the agreement. It’s the best deal you’re ever going to get."

Mark stared at the signature line on the settlement agreement.

Suddenly, the heavy conference room doors were pushed open.

Emily stood in the doorway.

She wasn't wearing her elegant maternity dresses today. She wore an oversized coat, her face splotchy and pale, clutching a designer envelope in her hand. Behind her, Sterling’s paralegal was trying desperately to apologize for the intrusion.

"Emily?" Mark stammered, standing up. "What are you doing here?"

Emily didn't look at Mark. She walked straight up to the glass table and dropped the envelope right in front of him.

"My father just pulled his private equity backing from your firm, Mark," Emily said, her voice dead, cold, and vibrating with pure, venomous satisfaction. "And these are my divorce papers."
