Chapter 20 - The Open Horizon

We returned from Tuscany on a bright Sunday evening, stepping off the plane into the familiar, electric energy of the city. My life was waiting for me—my promotion, my beautiful apartment, my career, and the man who loved me for who I was, not what I could provide.
I sat at my kitchen island with a steaming cup of dark roast coffee, looking out over the green canopy of the city park below, just as I had weeks ago before the trip. My savings account was secure, my new hybrid SUV was parked in the garage, and my career as Senior Procurement Director was thriving.
My phone chimed on the counter. It was a calendar notification: *Quarterly Executive Board Meeting - Tomorrow at 9 AM.*
I smiled, picking up the phone to clear the alert. As I swiped the screen, a breaking news notification popped up from a financial news app I subscribed to.
Headline: *Former Mercer Enterprises CEO Indicted on Federal Fraud Charges; Assets Seized in International Sweep.*
I stared at the screen, the notification glowing softly in the dim kitchen light. My breath hitched for just a fraction of a second, the final chapter of an old life closing with a sharp, definitive snap.
Suddenly, my phone rang. Not a text. A direct phone call.
The caller ID didn't show a blocked number or a family name. It flashed a private, restricted government extension—the federal bankruptcy trustee handling the remaining fallout of my father’s estate.
I looked at the ringing screen, the silence of the apartment suddenly pressing in around me.
Caleb walked into the kitchen, his brow furrowed as he saw the flashing screen. "Who’s calling at this hour?"
I didn't answer right away. I looked at the phone, then up at Caleb, a sudden, chilling realization dawning on me as to why the federal trustee would be calling my personal cell phone directly at eight o'clock on a Sunday night.
I pressed accept and brought the phone to my ear.
"Ms. Mercer?" a grave, official voice asked on the other end. "This is Arthur Vance’s legal liaison... we have an urgent matter regarding the secondary accounts discovered during the final asset seizure. It appears your name wasn't just co-signed on logistics... there's a safety deposit box registered in your name in Zurich containing assets your father tried to hide before the collapse."

My blood ran cold.
