Chapter 7 - The Inheritance of Choices

My oldest son, Nathan, tugged gently at the hem of my dark wool dress coat.
"Mommy," he whispered loudly, pointing a mittened finger at Daniel’s frozen, panic-stricken face. "Is that the man who wears the funny suit? Why is he sweating so much? It's freezing outside."
Daniel flinched as if he had been struck with a whip. His eyes locked onto Nathan’s face—the sharp, analytical eyes, the exact shape of the jaw, the unmistakable stamp of his own DNA staring back at him across five years of calculated abandonment.
He looked down the line to Chloe, whose bright, wicked smile mirrored his own college yearbook photos. He looked at Liam, with his quiet, intense stare, and finally at Maya, who stood slightly behind her brothers, flashing a tiny, perfect dimple in her left cheek.
Four children. Healthy, brilliant, disciplined, and utterly, permanently independent of him.
He had traded them for a gold-plated career, a Potomac estate, and a general's daughter. And now, the woman he had discarded had returned not as a broken, humiliated ex-wife, but as the commanding officer holding his entire professional future in the palm of her hand.
Victoria’s face flushed a deep, furious, mottled red. She stepped past Daniel, her diamond necklace flashing angrily in the stark landing lights.
"Daniel, have you lost your tongue?!" she shrieked, stabbing a manicured fingernail in my direction. "Are you just going to stand there and let this... this imposter humiliate us in front of my father’s colleagues?! That woman is your ex-wife! She’s nobody! My father is Retired Lieutenant General Thomas Hastings, and I will personally see to it that this little stunt costs her every stripe on her uniform!"
I turned my gaze slowly toward Victoria. My expression didn't flicker. I didn't blink. I simply looked at her the way an aerospace engineer looks at a clearly flawed structural stress calculation.
"Retired Lieutenant General Thomas Hastings," I repeated, my voice carrying clearly across the silent courtyard. "Yes, Victoria. I am well aware of who your father is."
Victoria sneered, tossing her blonde chignon over her shoulder. "Then you know he sits on the joint oversight committee. He can have you court-martialed before breakfast on Monday morning!"
"In fact," I continued, ignoring her outburst completely, "your father was on the oversight committee that unanimously approved my promotion to flag officer three weeks ago."
Victoria’s mouth snapped shut. Her sneer froze mid-expression.
"He’s a deeply pragmatic man, Victoria," I said, my voice dropping into a dry, academic register. "You should ask him about the classified command restructuring he voted on last month. It’s the exact same restructuring that places your husband's entire procurement division under my direct, unmitigated operational authority."
The color drained entirely from Victoria’s face. She looked at Daniel, her eyes wide with sudden, sickening realization. "Daniel... what is she talking about? What division?"

Daniel didn't answer her. He couldn't. He was staring at my shoulder boards again, his breath coming in shallow, ragged gasps that plumed white in the freezing air.
