Chapter 7 - A Cry in the Night

Before Cortez could process my words, I grabbed the heavy crystal decanter from the bar and hurled it with full force at the guard on the left.
The decanter struck him square in the forehead, shattering in a spray of bourbon and heavy glass. The guard collapsed like a marionette with cut strings.
The second guard reached for his sidearm, but I closed the distance instantly. In my years tracking international cartels, I hadn't just sat behind desks; I had trained with some of the best close-quarters combat instructors in the private sector.
I seized the guard's wrist, redirecting the drawing weapon, drove an elbow into his throat, and swept his leg out from under him. He hit the marble floor hard, the breath exploding from his lungs. I drove my heel down onto his wrist, dislodging the Glock 19, kicked it across the floor, and turned.
Cortez was already moving.
He didn't draw a gun; he lunged with military precision, driving a devastating right cross toward my temple. I slipped the punch, but his shoulder connected with my chest, slamming me back against the mahogany wall. The impact knocked the wind from my lungs.
"You always were weak, Mike!" Cortez hissed, driving a knee toward my ribs.
I blocked the knee with my forearm, spun inside his guard, and delivered a brutal headbutt straight into the bridge of his nose.
Cartilage crunched satisfyingly. Blood sprayed across Cortez’s face. He staggered back, roaring in fury, clutching his shattered nose.
I didn't wait. I bolted up the grand staircase, taking three steps at a time.
From the end of the east wing, a piercing, terrified scream echoed: "UNCLE MIKE!"
Ella.
I reached the corridor. Elia was desperately trying to drag the sobbing child toward the heavy steel fire door at the end of the hall. Ella was fighting with everything she had, kicking and biting Elia’s wrist.
"Let go of me! Uncle Mike said you're liars!" Ella screamed.
"Shut up, you brat!" Elia shrieked, raising her hand to strike the child.
"Don't you touch her!" I bellowed.
Elia froze, seeing me charge down the hall, covered in bourbon and Cortez’s blood. She let go of Ella and backed away, terror contorting her features. "Stay away from me! Cortez! Cortez!"
I scooped Ella up into my left arm, pressing her face firmly into my shoulder. "I’ve got you, butterfly. Close your eyes. Don't look at anything."
Below us, Cortez’s furious voice echoed up the stairwell. "LOCK DOWN THE PERIMETER! SEAL THE GATES! SHOOT ON SIGHT!"
The compound’s automated sirens began to wail—a deafening, strobing shriek as red emergency lights flooded the hallways. Cortez was locking the facility down into a fortress. The main doors would be magnetically deadbolted. The front gate would be impassable.
There was only one way out.
I sprinted down the service corridor toward the back laundry exit—the only door on an independent mechanical lock, designed for fire code compliance.
I kicked the emergency push-bar. The door flew open into the freezing, howling blizzard.
The sub-zero wind hit us like a physical blow. Ella gasped against my neck, shivering violently in her light dress. I stripped off my heavy outer flannel shirt, wrapped it securely around her small body, and sprinted into the blinding white storm.
Behind us, gunshots cracked through the howling wind, kicking up plumes of snow near my feet.
