Chapter 5 - THE HOSPITAL ROOM

When I opened my eyes, the harsh, fluorescent lights of a hospital room buzzed above me. The smell of disinfectant was thick, and the steady, rhythmic beep... beep... beep... of a heart monitor echoed beside my head.
I had an IV line in the back of my left hand, and an oxygen cannula under my nose.
Standing beside my bed was Dr. Patel, my OB-GYN, her face dark with extreme anger, holding a clipboard. Beside her was Nurse Sarah from the NICU.
"Maren," Dr. Patel said softly, her voice tight with suppressed rage. "Thank God you're awake."
"My... my babies?" I rasped, my throat raw.
"The babies are perfectly fine," Nurse Sarah stepped forward, giving my hand a gentle squeeze. "Miles, Arden, and Piper are doing great today. They all gained a few grams, and Arden is off her nasal cannula."
A massive wave of relief washed over me, and tears leaked from the corners of my eyes. "Thank God..."
Dr. Patel leaned over the bed, her expression stern. "Maren, I need to tell you what happened. Your internal staples held, but your external incision ruptured open due to physical strain and prolonged standing. You developed a localized hematoma, and you were bleeding significantly. If you had stayed in that kitchen another hour, you would have ended up in emergency surgery with a severe infection or internal hemorrhage."
I closed my eyes, fresh tears spilling down my cheeks. "I'm sorry..."
"Don't you dare apologize!" Dr. Patel's voice turned to iron. "Mrs. Gable told the ER nurses what happened. She told us your mother-in-law forced you to cook, and your husband supported it. Maren, this is medical neglect and physical abuse. You are four days post-op from a high-risk triplet C-section!"
Before I could reply, the door to my room burst open.
Grant walked in, his green sweater disheveled, his face red and sweating. Behind him was Darlene, wearing a designer jacket, looking furiously annoyed.
"There you are!" Darlene barked, stepping into the room as if she owned it. "Do you have any idea how embarrassing it was when you rode off in the neighbor's car like a lunatic? The whole family is sitting at my house waiting for dinner!"
"Maren, what the hell is wrong with you?" Grant demanded, walking up to the side of my bed. "You completely ruined Thanksgiving! Mom had to hire a caterer at the last minute to finish the food, and it cost fifteen hundred dollars! You owe her an apology!"
I stared at the two of them. I didn't say a word. I felt an eerie, icy calm wash over my whole body.
Dr. Patel stepped directly between Grant and my hospital bed, her tall frame blocking his view of me.
"Who are you?" Dr. Patel asked coldly.
"I'm her husband," Grant spat. "And this is none of your business. Maren, get your clothes on. The doctor can give you some painkillers and we can go back—"
"I am Dr. Patel, Chief of Obstetrics," my doctor interrupted, her voice booming through the room with absolute authority. "And as your wife's attending physician, I am telling you right now that you are going to back away from this bed immediately."
Grant blinked, caught off guard. "What?"
"Your wife suffered a severe surgical wound dehiscence," Dr. Patel said, stepping forward until she was inches from Grant’s chest. "She was bleeding profusely when she arrived. She is severely dehydrated, emotionally traumatized, and dangerously close to a life-threatening infection. And according to standard medical protocol, I am documenting every single physical finding on her body as evidence of domestic abuse and medical neglect."
Darlene’s jaw dropped. "Domestic abuse? How dare you! We are a respected family in this city!"
"I don't give a damn who you are," Dr. Patel retorted coldly. She pressed a call button on the wall. "Security, I need two officers in Room 412 immediately for an aggressive removal."
"You can't kick me out!" Grant yelled, his voice cracking. "She's my wife! Those are my kids in the NICU!"
"You have five seconds to walk out of this room," Dr. Patel warned, her eyes lethal. "Or hospital security will escort you out in handcuffs, and I will personally file a restraining order on her behalf before the sun sets today."
Two heavy-set security guards appeared in the doorway, their hands resting on their utility belts.
Grant looked at the guards, then at Dr. Patel, and finally at me. "Maren... tell them to stop. Tell them you're fine."
I looked Grant dead in the eye.
"Get out," I said. My voice wasn't loud, but it was as sharp as a razor blade. "Get out of my room, Grant. And don't ever touch me again."
Grant’s face drained of color. Darlene grabbed his arm, her face twisted in shock and rage. "Fine! Come on, Grant! Let her stay here alone! Let's see how well she handles three babies without our money and our help!"
They were escorted out down the hall.
When the door clicked shut, the silence in the room was deafening. I looked up at Dr. Patel and Nurse Sarah.
"Dr. Patel?" I asked softly.
May you like
"Yes, Maren?"
"Can you help me call a lawyer?"
