Chapter 17 - The Camden Sanctuary

The Mercer coastal estate in Camden stood like a sentinel of dark stone and frosted glass against the crashing surf of the Atlantic. Unlike the ostentatious North Harbor Grand Hotel where Ethan’s artificial empire had spectacularly collapsed months earlier, this sprawling compound radiated an aura of timeless, impenetrable authority. There were no flashing paparazzi lights, no hollow sycophants clamoring for invitations, and no glittering chandeliers masking a hollow core.

When the armored SUV swept through the wrought-iron security gates and pulled up to the grand stone portico, Director Vance opened the door without a word. Ethan stepped out into the crisp sea breeze, his boots crunching lightly on the gravel drive. The towering oak double doors swung open before he could even reach for the heavy brass ring, revealing Margaret Sloan in her signature charcoal-gray pantsuit.

"Mr. Hale," Margaret said, her tone professional, devoid of either warmth or malice. "Mrs. Hale went into labor two hours ago. The private medical wing on the east pavilion has been fully operational since dawn."

Ethan’s throat went dry. The sheer physical reality of what was happening washed over him in a dizzying wave. All the corporate restructuring, all the brutal dock shifts, all the bitter pills of humility he had swallowed over the winter suddenly felt like a preamble to this single, monumental moment. "Is she... are they safe?" Ethan asked, his voice tighter than he intended.

"The medical team is among the finest private specialists in the world," Margaret replied, stepping aside to let him pass into the grand marble foyer. "She requested that you be brought directly to the observation gallery upon your arrival. Follow me."

As Ethan walked through the familiar corridors—the same halls where he had once arrogantly believed he was a guest of honor—he realized how thoroughly every trace of his former arrogance had been scrubbed away. He was no longer the front man of a borrowed empire. He was a man standing naked before the consequences of his own choices, waiting for the only judgment that truly mattered.
