Chapter 10 - The Horizon

Later that evening, after the gala concluded and Chloe was fast asleep in her crib at home, I stood on the private balcony of my penthouse apartment, wrapped in a cashmere shawl, watching the moonlight dance across the dark waters of Lake Michigan.
The city lights twinkled like diamonds against the velvet skyline—the same skyline where Ethan Caldwell had once thought he was the undisputed king of his universe.
Where was Ethan now? Rumor had it he was living in a modest studio apartment on the far north side of the city, working a low-level administrative job while awaiting his federal sentencing hearing on wire fraud and securities manipulation. I placed my hand gently on my heart, feeling the steady, powerful rhythm of my own pulse. The nightmare was over. The plan had gone live, the wreckage had been cleared, and the future was entirely, beautifully mine.
I took a deep breath of the crisp Chicago air, smiled out at the limitless horizon, and stepped back inside to my daughter.
