Chapter 9 - THE RECKONING

The armored SUV smashed through the suburban fence, plowing through deep snowbanks and hitting the main paved road with a sickening screech of tires.

In the back seat, Emily was sobbing hysterically, clutching her stomach while I kept my eyes glued to the rearview mirror.

"Is he behind us? Is he coming?" she cried out, her voice ragged.

I checked the mirror. Through the blinding snow and swirling tire smoke, headlights flashed. A single black SUV burst out of the Maple Street driveway, right on our tail.

"They’re following us!" I yelled, swerving violently to avoid a snowplow on the empty highway.

"Keep driving!" Emily shouted, though her voice was drowned out by the roar of the engine.

Suddenly, a massive black sedan came roaring out of a side street at eighty miles an hour, cutting directly across the highway. It was Luca’s backup detail—four reinforced vehicles driven by his most loyal syndicate enforcers, drawn by the GPS distress beacon in our car.

With the precision of a military strike, Luca’s enforcers boxed in the pursuing mercenary vehicle, forcing it off the icy road and into a deep snowdrift where it slammed into a utility pole with a metallic crunch.

I let out a breath I felt like I’d been holding for an hour, my foot easing slightly off the gas.

An hour later, we were back behind the massive iron gates of the Moretti estate. But this time, the mansion wasn't hosting an engagement dinner.

Armed guards patrolled the perimeter. Floodlights illuminated the sprawling snow-covered grounds.

Inside the grand study—a room lined with heavy leather books and glowing fireplaces—Luca Moretti stood by the mahogany desk. His tuxedo jacket was gone, his white shirt sleeves rolled up to his elbows, exposing scarred, powerful forearms.

The heavy mahogany door swung open.

Two of Luca’s enforcers dragged a struggling, frantic Vanessa Bellini into the room.

Her red silk gown was ruined, stained with mud and snow. Her hair was wild, her makeup smeared across her cheeks, and her aristocratic composure was completely, permanently shattered.

"Let me go! You can't do this! Do you know who my contacts are?" she shrieked, thrashing against the guards.

"Shut her up," Luca said quietly.

An enforcer shoved a heavy hand over her mouth, forcing her down onto her knees in front of the desk.

Emily stood near the fireplace, wrapped in a warm wool blanket, with me standing right beside her. She looked down at the woman who had tried to destroy her life, her father, and her unborn child.

Luca walked around the desk, stopping right in front of Vanessa. He looked down at her the way a judge looks at a plague rat.

"You wanted the ledgers," Luca said, his voice terrifyingly calm. "You wanted to rebuild a criminal empire that your father ran into the ground."

Vanessa clawed at the enforcer's hand, gasping for air as he loosened his grip slightly. "Luca... please. We can make a deal. The cartel—we have people everywhere, they’ll hunt you down, they’ll—"

"There is no cartel left," Luca interrupted softly. "By morning, every single asset, safehouse, and co-conspirator tied to your name in this country will be in federal custody or at the bottom of Lake Michigan."

Vanessa’s eyes bulged with absolute, unadulterated terror. She realized then—too late—that she wasn't dealing with a corrupt businessman or a political rival. She was dealing with a monster she had foolishly tried to play.

"Take her away," Luca commanded his men without a second glance. "Put her on a cargo freighter bound for South America. Make sure she never sets foot on American soil again."

May you like

"No! NO!" Vanessa screamed as the guards hoisted her up by her arms, dragging her kicking and screaming out of the study and down the long hallway until the heavy doors shut behind them, plunging the room into blessed, permanent silence.
