Chapter 18 - The Final Audit

The deputy—a burly man with a red face and a hand resting heavily on the grip of his service revolver—stopped dead in the doorway of the records bay. His eyes darted from Marcus’s terrified expression to Nora standing calmly by the oak table, and finally locked onto Adrian, who stood tall and unyielding beside the glowing terminal screen.
"Captain Vance," the deputy growled, his hand tightening around his holster. "You’re in a restricted municipal facility after hours without a county permit. Step away from the terminal right now, or you’re under arrest for unauthorized access to government property."
Adrian didn't move an inch. He slowly slid his hands into the pockets of his tactical jacket, his gray eyes locking onto the deputy with the absolute, terrifying stillness of a sniper holding a bead on a hostile target.
"Check your radio, Deputy," Adrian said, his voice low, steady, and carrying the unmistakable authority of a commanding officer. "Call Sheriff Miller’s successor on the direct federal patch channel. Ask him if the data synchronization protocol currently running on this mainframe was authorized under federal subpoena 88-B."
The deputy hesitated, his hand hovering uncertainly over his weapon. He looked down the hallway toward the stairwell, then back at Adrian, sensing the lethal gravity radiating from the former captain.
"I don't need a federal patch to know when someone’s breaking county law—" the deputy started, reaching for his radio mic.
Before he could finish the sentence, the red LED status light on the mainframe terminal blinked from amber to solid, brilliant green.
A sharp, robotic chime echoed through the basement room.
Across the screen, a clean, unalterable system notification flashed in bold white letters:
*SYNCHRONIZATION COMPLETE. ALL MUNICIPAL BOND ASSETS REVERTED TO FEDERAL RECEIVERSHIP. FORGED DEEDS VOIDED PURSUANT TO FEDERAL RACKETEERING ACT SECTION 1962.*
At that exact second, the deputy’s portable radio crackled to life with a burst of static, followed by the crisp, authoritative voice of the new county sheriff:
*"Deputy Higgins? This is the Sheriff. Stand down immediately. You are currently standing inside a secured federal evidence perimeter under the direct jurisdiction of the United States District Court. Step away from Captain Vance, or you will be placed under immediate arrest for obstruction of justice."*
The color drained entirely from the deputy’s face. His hand slipped off his holster as if the leather had turned to fire. He swallowed hard, staring at Adrian with a mixture of shock, disbelief, and sheer terror.
Marcus let out a long, shuddering breath, sliding down the side of the filing cabinet until he hit the concrete floor, burying his face in his hands as the weight of a decade’s worth of corruption finally lifted from his shoulders.
Nora walked over to Adrian, her steps light, steady, and completely unafraid. She stood beside him, sliding her hand into his rough, calloused palm, her fingers interlocking with his with a strength that nothing in this world could ever break again.
Adrian looked down at her, a slow, genuine smile finally touching the corners of his mouth—the first real smile he had worn since the day he walked through the front door of his mother’s house with a box of pastries for a woman who deserved the world.

"It’s over," Nora whispered, her dark eyes shining with tears of absolute peace as she looked up at him.
"Not yet," Adrian said softly, pulling her closer against his side as the heavy footsteps of federal marshals echoed down the concrete hallway to secure the records room. "The trial starts in January. But the hard part—the part where we didn't know where we stood—is finished."
