Chapter 15 - The Golden Anniversary

By November, Mercer Table Catering had expanded its staff to ten full-time employees and secured a permanent, exclusive partnership with three of the city’s premier luxury event venues.

The business was thriving, but more importantly, Rachel’s life felt balanced. She had time to sleep, time to travel, and time to enjoy the quiet, beautiful solitude of her downtown loft.

On a crisp Friday afternoon, Rachel received an unexpected email through her business portal.

The subject line read: Private Catering Inquiry - 50th Wedding Anniversary.

Rachel opened the email, expecting another high-end corporate gala or tech startup launch party. Instead, the message was signed by an elderly gentleman named Arthur Vance, who explained that he and his wife were celebrating their golden wedding anniversary in December. They wanted an intimate, beautifully catered dinner for twenty close friends at their historic home in the hills overlooking the city.

Attached to the inquiry was a detailed note explaining why they had specifically chosen Mercer Table Catering.

“We read about your uncompromising standards for quality and respect in a local culinary magazine profile last month,” Arthur wrote. “My wife and I have been married for fifty years, and the secret to our longevity has been simple: never taking each other for granted, and ensuring that the person who cooks the feast gets to sit at the head of the table to enjoy it.”

Rachel stared at the screen, a slow, radiant smile spreading across her face.

She replied to the inquiry within ten minutes, accepting the booking and adding a personal note: “Dear Arthur, I would be honored to cook for your anniversary. And I promise you, everyone at that table will pull their own weight.”
