Chapter 8 - The Ultimatum Delivered

On New Year’s Eve, the city was buzzing with anticipation for the countdown to the new year.

Inside our home, however, the atmosphere was warm, cozy, and filled with the gentle sound of board games and laughter. Emma and Noah were curled up on the living room rug, building an elaborate puzzle while hot cocoa mugs sat steaming on the coffee table beside them.

At 6:00 PM, my doorbell rang.

I walked to the front door and opened it. Standing on the porch was a local courier holding a heavy manila envelope bearing the official seal of Vance & Sterling Legal Counsel.

“Sign here, please, Ms. Vance,” the courier said politely.

I signed the electronic pad, took the envelope, and closed the door.

I walked into my study, sat down at my desk, and pulled out the contents. It was the finalized settlement agreement, countersigned by Eleanor’s new attorney—a frantic defense lawyer who had clearly advised my mother that her only alternative to signing was a jumpsuit and a pair of handcuffs.

Attached to the legal papers was a handwritten note from Eleanor herself, scribbled on a piece of cheap hotel stationery in her shaky, furious handwriting:

Rachel,I hope you are satisfied. You have destroyed everything your father and I built. Your legal documents are signed. My lawyers tell me I have no choice. Leave me in peace.— Eleanor

Beneath that note was a printout of a message she had sent into The Vance Dynasty group chat half an hour earlier—a message that had already prompted stunned silence from both Caleb and Melissa.

On the screen of my phone, the notification read:

Eleanor Vance: "I want to formally apologize to my grandchildren, Emma and Noah, and to my daughter Rachel. My actions and words regarding the holidays were unjust, cruel, and unacceptable. I take full responsibility for my behavior."

I stared at the screen, watching the chat interface remain dead silent for several minutes before Caleb frantically replied with a single question mark, and Melissa simply left the group entirely.

The digital dynasty had fallen. The empire built on lies and manipulation had collapsed under the weight of its own hypocrisy.

I locked my phone, laid it face-up on the desk, and walked over to the window.

Outside, the first fireworks of New Year’s Eve were beginning to streak across the night sky, bursting into brilliant colors of gold, red, and blue against the dark winter canvas.

The old year was dying. And the new one belonged entirely to us.
