Chapter 5 - Confrontation Over Dessert

The room fell into an awkward, suffocating stillness.

Ethan and Brooke walked over from the dining table, sensing the sudden shift in energy. Brooke was holding a small silver saucer with a slice of my pecan pie on it.

"Dad?" Brooke asked, looking between her father and Julian. "Do you know him?"

Arthur didn't answer her. His eyes were locked onto Julian Vance, fixed in a stare of pure, unadulterated terror disguised as fury.

"Get out of my daughter’s house," Arthur hissed, stepping forward, his corporate polish cracking wide open. "I don't know how you got in here, Julian, but you have no right—"

"I have every right, Arthur," Julian interrupted smoothly, taking a slow step toward him. "In fact, I was just telling Evelyn how much you enjoyed the old days. Before you owned a ten-million-dollar estate in Country Club Hills. Back when you were just a dirty accountant stealing from two working-class men who trusted you with their life savings."

"That is a lie!" Arthur barked, his voice rising sharply.

Several guests at the dining table paused, their forks suspended in mid-air. Brooke looked terrified, her eyes darting from her father to her high-society guests who were now watching the scene unfold.

"Dad, what is he talking about?" Ethan demanded, stepping in between Arthur and Julian. "Who is this guy?"

"He’s a con man!" Arthur shouted, pointing a shaking finger at Julian. "He’s the son of a criminal who embezzled millions from a firm thirty years ago! He’s been harassing my office for months trying to extort money from me!"

"Extort?" Julian laughed—a dry, bitter sound. "I don't want your money, Arthur. I want justice for my father. And I want Evelyn to know the truth about how you paid for that law school scholarship you gave her son fifteen years ago."

Ethan gasped, looking over at me. "The Vance Community Scholarship? The one that paid my full tuition at Duke?"

"It wasn't a scholarship, Ethan," I said, my voice echoing clearly through the vaulted room.

Everyone looked at me.

I walked right up to Arthur. I’m five-foot-four, and Arthur was over six feet tall, but in that moment, he shrank under my gaze.

"Walt told me about that scholarship before he died," I said, the pieces finally coming together in my mind. "Walt said an anonymous donor gave Ethan the money. But it wasn't a gift, was it, Arthur? It was hush money. You gave Walt just enough money to put our son through law school so Walt wouldn't go to the district attorney with what he knew."

Arthur’s mouth opened, but no sound came out.

"Evelyn, please," Brooke begged, stepping up beside her father, tears spilling down her cheeks. "Not tonight. Please, not in front of everyone! My father’s business partners are here! Ethan’s boss is here!"

"Your father’s business partners deserve to know who they’re going into business with," Julian said calmly.

He pulled a small grey thumb drive from his pocket and held it up.

"In twenty minutes, I’m broadcasting the original 1991 audit files to the North Carolina Secretary of State’s financial crimes division," Julian said. "Unless, of course, Evelyn hands over the original safety deposit key tonight to verify the physical ledgers."

Julian turned his gaze to me.

"The key is at your house, Evelyn. Inside Walt’s framed portrait. Make your choice. Do we protect the man who ruined my father and blackmailed yours... or do we finally bring the truth to light?"
