Chapter 4 - The Reality Sets In

For three full seconds, my father stood frozen, staring at the airline agent as if she were speaking a foreign language.
"Cancelled?" my father echoed, his voice pitching upward in disbelief. "That’s impossible. You must be looking at the wrong database. I am Arthur Vance. Look up my corporate profile—Vance Global Holdings. Our seats are guaranteed!"
Sarah didn't flinch. She turned her monitor slightly so the confirmation status was visible. Across the screen, stamped in bold, unyielding red letters, were the words: RESERVATION CANCELLED - NON-REFUNDABLE - NO REINSTATEMENT.
"I assure you, Mr. Vance, the database is correct," Sarah said, her tone professional yet firm. "Furthermore, the payment method associated with these tickets was flagged as invalid late last night. The primary account holder revoked all secondary permissions."
My mother’s face drained of color, her manicured hand flying to her throat. "Revoked? What do you mean revoked? Julian wouldn't... he couldn't do that to his own family! We are supposed to be flying to the Mediterranean today!"
"Well, ma'am, you aren't flying anywhere on these tickets," Sarah replied, turning back to her keyboard. "And since there are no other available seats on today’s fully booked flight, I will have to ask you to step away from the priority desk so I can assist the passengers behind you."
"Step away?" Chloe shrieked, dropping her phone onto the floor with a loud clatter. "Do you know who we are? We are VIPs! We have five bags of luggage waiting to be checked, and our driver is already parked outside! You can't just turn us away!"
Behind them, a line of actual first-class passengers began to murmur impatiently. A businessman in a tailored suit cleared his throat loudly, glaring at my family.
My father’s face mottled from pale white to a furious, violent shade of crimson. His aristocratic composure completely shattered, replaced by the ugly, defensive rage of a man whose illusion of absolute control had just been ripped away in public.
"Listen to me, you arrogant little bureaucrat," my father snarled, leaning over the counter and pointing a shaking finger directly at Sarah’s face. "You will fix this right now, or I will have your job before the end of the hour! Call the station manager! Call corporate! Do you have any idea how much money my family pumps into this airline?"
Sarah’s eyes narrowed. She pressed a silent security alert button beneath her desk. "Sir, I must ask you to lower your voice immediately and step back from the counter. You are creating a public disturbance."
"I am not stepping anywhere until my boarding passes are printed!" my father bellowed, his voice echoing off the high glass ceilings of Terminal 4.
Before Sarah could respond, heavy footsteps echoed behind them. Two airport security officers in crisp navy uniforms and tactical vests materialized on either side of my family, their expressions grim and unyielding.
"Sir, step away from the counter right now," the lead security officer commanded, placing a firm, heavy hand on my father’s shoulder.
"Take your hands off me!" my father yelled, violently shaking the officer's hand away. "Do you know who I am? I'm Arthur Vance! This is an outrage! We are victims of a computer glitch!"
"Step back, sir. That's a final warning," the officer said coldly, motioning for backup.

Within seconds, four more security personnel converged on the VIP desk. Travelers all around turned to stare, whispering and pointing at the dramatic spectacle unfolding at the exclusive counter. My mother buried her face in her hands, mortified, while Chloe began to cry hysterically, her designer handbag slipping from her shoulder.
"Get your luggage off the priority cart," the lead officer ordered, his voice echoing through the terminal. "You are trespassing in a restricted service zone. Move."
