Chapter 18 - The Fall of the Patriarch

The silence in the boardroom was absolute. You could hear the faint hum of the air conditioning unit and the distant sirens wailing down on the Manhattan streets far below.
Richard clutched the edge of the mahogany table, his knuckles turning white. His chest heaved as he fought for air, his eyes darting frantically around the room, desperately seeking support from the men and women who had nodded at his every word for the past twenty years.
One by one, the senior partners averted their gaze. No one dared to look him in the eye. They were self-preservationists above all else; they knew that hitching their wagons to a sinking ship was a quick ticket to professional ruin.
"You... you can't do this," Richard whispered, his voice cracking, losing all its previous bluster. The formidable corporate tyrant was gone, replaced by a desperate, aging man staring into the abyss of his own failures. He looked up at me, his eyes wide and pleading. "Claire... Claire, please. I'm your father. We're family. You can't do this to me. Victoria is my daughter—think of your sister!"
I let out a quiet, humorless laugh. "My sister? The same sister who watched you pour wine down my back and laughed along with her new husband? The same sister who hasn't spoken a single word to me since the day she took her vows?" I leaned in closer, my voice dropping to a cold, razor-sharp whisper. "Where was your concept of 'family' when you treated me like dirt for twenty-five years? Where was your family loyalty when you threw me out of your house with nothing more than the clothes on my back?"
Richard swallowed hard, his throat dry. "I... I was trying to toughen you up. In business, you have to—"
"Don't lecture me on business," I interrupted sharply. "You ran this company into the ground with your ego, your bad investments, and your arrogant assumption that nobody would ever call your bluff."
Ethan stepped forward, placing a warm, grounding hand on the small of my back. He looked down at Richard with absolute disdain. "The board has already voted unanimously, Richard. Your resignation—or your termination—is official as of ten minutes ago. Pack your things. Security will escort you to the lobby."
"No," Richard snarled, his sudden desperation morphing back into blind fury. He lunged forward, his face twisting with malice. "This isn't over! I'll fight this in court! I'll ruin you, Claire! You hear me? You're nothing without me! You're just a parasite living off rich men!"
Before Richard could take another step toward me, Ethan moved with terrifying speed. He stepped directly in front of me, his tall, muscular frame blocking Richard completely. Ethan’s dark eyes narrowed into dangerous slits, radiating a lethal intensity that made even the bravest men in the room recoil.
"Take another step toward her," Ethan said softly, his voice dangerously low, "and I won't just take your company. I'll make sure you spend the rest of your natural life defending yourself against federal fraud charges."
Richard froze. He looked at Ethan, truly looked at him, and realized for the first time the sheer magnitude of the monster he had accidentally awakened. Ethan Caldwell did not make empty threats.

Defeated, broken, and utterly humiliated, Richard staggered backward, catching his hip against the corner of the table. He didn't say another word. He simply turned, grabbed his leather briefcase from the floor, and rushed out of the boardroom, his head bowed in absolute disgrace.
