Chapter 7 - Shadows in the Archives

The old campus library archives—Building Four—smelled of damp paper, rotting wood, and decades of forgotten history.

The heavy oak doors were unlocked, the "CLOSED FOR RENOVATION" caution tape torn carelessly off the hinges. We stepped inside into pitch-darkness, the autumn sunlight filtering in dusty, pale shafts through the high, grimy stained-glass windows. Rows of towering metal bookshelves stretched out into the gloom like the ribs of a giant, fossilized beast.

“Stay close,” Marcus Vance whispered, keeping his hand resting near his inner jacket pocket where a secure satellite communicator sat ready. “If she’s in here, she’s unpredictable.”

We crept down the central aisle, our footsteps silent against the thick layer of dust coating the hardwood floor.

At the far end of the archive hall, in a small alcove housing the old microfilm terminals, a faint, flickering blue light illuminated the darkness.

A laptop screen.

We crept closer, stepping behind a massive wooden pillar.

Sitting in front of an open laptop connected directly into an old ethernet data port in the wall was Madison Cole. Her hair was wild, her eyes bloodshot and manic, her fingers flying across the keyboard with frantic speed. On the screen, a corporate decryption progress bar was ticking upward: 78%... 79%... 80%...

She was actually downloading classified acquisition files from my father’s private network.

“Got you,” I whispered, stepping out from behind the pillar.

Madison gasped, her fingers freezing on the keys. She whipped her head around, her face twisting into an ugly, feral snarl when she saw me standing there with Olivia, Ethan, and the attorney.

“Sophia,” Madison hissed, her voice echoing hollowly off the stone walls. She didn't look defeated; she looked unhinged. “You just don’t know when to mind your own business, do you?”

“Stealing federal corporate data is a felony, Madison,” Marcus Vance said calmly, stepping forward with his phone raised, recording the laptop screen. “Step away from the keyboard right now, and we might talk to the prosecutor about leniency.”

“Leniency?” Madison shrieked, standing up so fast her chair screeched loudly against the floor. She slammed her hand down on the keyboard, hitting the enter key. The progress bar jumped to 98%... 99%... COMPLETE.

A small dialogue box popped up on the screen: ACQUISITION FILES DOWNLOADED SUCCESSFULLY.

Madison let out a high-pitched, hysterical laugh. Her eyes gleamed with manic triumph. “Too late! I have the files! Do you know what happens when I leak these encrypted restructuring plans to the press, Sophia? Your father’s stock will tank overnight! Millions of dollars wiped out in seconds! Unless…”

She paused, a sickening, predatory smirk spreading across her face.

“Unless what, Madison?” I asked, my voice deadly calm, though my hands were clenched into tight fists at my sides.

“Unless you get on your knees right now,” Madison sneered, pointing a trembling finger at the dusty floorboards. “Beg me not to release them. Apologize for ruining my life, my family, and my future. Film it on your phone, and post it to every student group chat on campus. Prove to everyone that you’re nothing without your daddy protecting you!”

She was completely delusional. The humiliation of her public downfall had snapped whatever fragile grip she had left on reality.

“Madison, you’re insane,” Olivia said, stepping forward with disgust written all over her face. “You’re throwing your entire life away just for petty revenge?”

“Shut up, you thrift-store nobody!” Madison screamed, her voice cracking. She reached down beside the desk and grabbed a heavy, antique bronze paperweight shaped like a globe, raising it like a weapon. “Step any closer, and I swear I’ll smash this laptop to pieces—and then I’ll cave your head in, Sophia!”

Ethan didn't hesitate. With athletic speed, he lunged forward down the aisle, tackling Madison around the waist just as she brought the heavy bronze paperweight down.

They crashed hard onto the dusty floorboards, the laptop sliding across the desk and smashing onto the floor, its screen shattering into a spiderweb of glowing cracks.

“Get off me! Let me go!” Madison shrieked, thrashing wildly, scratching and biting like a cornered wildcat.

Marcus Vance stepped in, easily pulling Madison away from Ethan and pinning her arms behind her back with professional precision, clicking a pair of heavy zip-ties around her wrists before she could do any real damage.

“Federal marshals are already five minutes out,” the attorney said smoothly into his lapel mic, looking down at a sobbing, thrashing Madison Cole as she kicked helplessly against the floor. “The data was encrypted on a secure read-only sandbox server; she didn't actually download real corporate files—she just triggered a honey-pot trap our security team set up the moment her IP address pinged.”

Madison froze, her screaming abruptly cutting off. Her eyes widened in absolute, soul-crushing horror as she realized the truth.

She hadn't stolen my father’s empire. She had just walked straight into a titanium trap, recorded herself committing a federal cybercrime, and sealed her own permanent ticket to a prison cell.

“No…” Madison whimpered, collapsing onto the dusty floor as the fight completely drained out of her. “No… no, please…”

I stood over her, looking down at the girl who had spent weeks trying to destroy my life, feeling no anger—only a profound, pitying emptiness.

“You did this to yourself, Madison,” I said softly.

Sirens wailed in the distance outside the old library, growing louder and closer by the second. The nightmare was finally coming to an end.
