Chapter 5 - Digital Graves and Swiss Vaults

While Vanessa was downstairs in the chef's kitchen preparing breakfast—playing the doting, domestic bride-to-be—I locked myself inside the heavy oak double doors of my private study on the third floor.
I immediately pulled the encrypted military-grade laptop Marcus Vance had provided me from my briefcase and connected it to a secure satellite uplink. Within three seconds, a secure video feed popped onto the screen.
Marcus Vance appeared, sitting in front of a wall of flickering multi-monitor displays in his Century City bunker. His dark eyes were shadowed with grim intensity.
"Daniel," Marcus spoke in a low, clipped tone. "I’ve completed the preliminary financial forensic audit on your accounts and the Whitmore Family Trust. You need to brace yourself."
"Give it to me straight, Marcus. Don't sugarcoat a damn thing."
Marcus clicked a key, and a dizzying web of corporate flowcharts, offshore banking routing numbers, and shell entities flooded my screen.
"For the past fourteen months," Marcus explained, his laser pointer tracing a series of red lines across the graphic, "Vanessa Sterling has been systematically using the limited power of attorney you granted her for the Whitmore Foundation to execute micro-transfers. Nothing large enough to trigger internal compliance alerts—tranches of $250,000, $400,000, disguised as philanthropic land acquisitions in the Caribbean and Central America."
"Where did the money actually go?"
"It was routed through six shell corporations registered in the Cayman Islands, then bounced through a private banking entity in Zurich, and finally consolidated into an irrevocable numbered trust registered in the Cook Islands," Marcus said. "Total capital liquidated to date: eighty-two million dollars."
Eighty-two million. Siphoned directly out from beneath my nose while I was planning our wedding.
"And who is the sole designated beneficiary of that Cook Islands trust?" I asked, though I already knew the sickening answer.
"A private entity named *Vanguard Phoenix LLC*," Marcus replied. "And thirty minutes ago, I managed to crack the encrypted registry of Vanguard Phoenix through a back-channel contact at Interpol. The controlling director isn't Vanessa Sterling."
Marcus brought up a high-resolution scanned document on the screen. It was a scanned copy of a valid Saint Kitts and Nevis passport issued four years ago.
The name on the passport read *Alexander Wright*.
The photograph on the passport was Andrew Whitmore.
My brother was staring out at me from the screen. His hair was dyed darker, his jaw sporting a trimmed, manicured beard, but the cold, arrogant smirk was unmistakable. He was thirty-two years old now, looking tanned, healthy, and entirely alive.
"My God," I breathed, my hand trembling against the mahogany desk. "He really did it."
"It gets worse, Daniel," Marcus continued relentlessly. "The final transfer—the kill shot—is scheduled for 10:00 AM this morning. That's why Vanessa wanted you calm. That's why she was dragging Maria’s body instead of calling 911. Maria discovered that Vanessa had forged your biometric digital signature on the master divestment order for Whitmore Global's primary real estate portfolio. That's a four-hundred-million-dollar liquidation."
"If that transfer clears," I said, cold dread washing over me, "Whitmore Global goes into immediate technical insolvency. The banks will seize our domestic assets, and the four hundred million vanishes into the Cook Islands."
"Precisely," Marcus nodded. "And Alexander Wright—your dearly departed brother Andrew—becomes one of the wealthiest private ghosts on the planet, completely untouchable."
"What about Andrew’s location?" I demanded. "Where is he right now, Marcus? If he’s in Los Angeles, where is he hiding?"
Marcus typed rapidly on his keyboard. "We tracked the satellite IP address of the encrypted burner phone that pinged the hitman who hit Maria’s sister’s house in East LA. The signal didn't come from an offshore yacht or a foreign hotel. It bounced off a cell tower in West Hollywood."
Marcus magnified a satellite map on the screen, zooming in on an exclusive, ultra-luxury high-rise tower on Sunset Boulevard—*The Carlyle Residences*.
"Penthouse 4B," Marcus said. "Leased three weeks ago under a blind corporate LLC managed by Vanessa Sterling’s personal attorney. Andrew is sitting right there, Daniel. Less than four miles from your front door."
A soft, rhythmic tap-tap-tap sounded at the double doors of my study.
"Daniel, darling?" Vanessa’s sweet, melodic voice drifted through the heavy wood. "Breakfast is ready! I made your favorite—poached eggs with avocado and smoked salmon. Come down before it gets cold!"
I looked back at the screen, looking at the smug, grinning face of the brother I had mourned for six years, and then down at the financial documents proving that my fiancée was robbing me blind.
"Marcus," I whispered into the mic. "Freeze the master divestment transfer at the federal clearinghouse level. Use our DHS contacts. Tell them it's suspected terrorist financing—I don't care what flag you fly, just lock the funds for the next four hours."
"Consider it done," Marcus replied. "And what are you going to do about the viper downstairs?"
I slowly closed the lid of the encrypted laptop.
May you like
"I'm going to have breakfast with my fiancée," I said. "And then I'm going to meet my brother."
