Chapter 8 - The Custody and Corporate Climax

Six weeks later.

The Cook County Domestic Relations Courtroom 1804 was cold, cavernous, and lined with dark oak panels that had witnessed the bitter dissolution of thousands of families.

Jonas sat at the defense table across the aisle from me.

He was unrecognizable from the polished, arrogant entrepreneur who had adjusted his tie in the Hyatt mirror six weeks earlier. He wore a cheap gray suit that hung loosely from his shoulders, his face gaunt, his eyes sunken with dark, bruised hollows. His father sat behind him in the gallery, staring down at his shoes in sullen humiliation.

Beside Jonas sat his court-appointed divorce attorney, a harassed-looking woman with stacks of disorganized paper.

Across the aisle, I sat flanked by Marcus Vance and our family law litigator, Sarah Sterling. I wore a tailored navy suit, my posture upright, my hands resting calmly on the table.

Judge Evelyn Martinez—a sharp-eyed jurist in her late fifties with a reputation for mercilessly shredding dishonest litigants—peered down from the bench over her half-moon spectacles.

"Mr. Hart," Judge Martinez began, her voice ringing off the high plaster ceilings, "we are here this morning to finalize the emergency custody petitions, spousal support waivers, and asset distributions pursuant to the dissolution of marriage."

Jonas’s attorney stood up quickly. "Your Honor, my client requests shared physical custody on a 50/50 alternating-week schedule. Despite the unfortunate... regulatory publicity surrounding his business, Mr. Hart is a dedicated father. He has a fundamental constitutional right to raise his children. Furthermore, Mrs. Hart’s recent multi-million-dollar venture funding demonstrates that she will be traveling extensively as CEO of Tria Innovations, leaving the children with third-party nannies. My client is currently unemployed and available to provide full-time domestic care."

I felt a surge of cold fury tighten in my chest, but Marcus placed a gentle, warning hand on my forearm. *Let them dig,* his touch said.

Judge Martinez didn't even look at Jonas's lawyer. She turned her gaze to Sarah Sterling. "Petitioner's response?"

Sarah stood smoothly.

"Your Honor, we submit into evidence Exhibit D: the sworn deposition of Denise Tremblay, Chief Concierge of the Hyatt Regency McCormick Place, accompanied by certified hotel security footage from October 15th."

Jonas stiffened visibly at the defense table.

"On that morning," Sarah continued, her voice crisp and devastating, "while Mrs. Hart was working on product demonstrations, Mr. Jonas Hart ordered hotel staff to pack his wife’s and his three twenty-month-old children’s belongings without their consent. He canceled their accommodations under the false pretense that Mrs. Hart was 'unstable.' The surveillance footage shows Mr. Hart abandoning his three children and their mother in a public hotel lobby next to their suitcases, without arranging transportation, without inquiring if they had food, and explicitly instructing the front desk to bar them from returning to their room."

"That was taken out of context!" Jonas blurted out, jumping to his feet. "I had an enterprise meeting! I was trying to manage a corporate crisis!"

Judge Martinez slammed her gavel down with a sharp, terrifying crack.

"Sit down, Mr. Hart!" she barked. "One more outburst in my courtroom and I will hold you in contempt and remand you directly back to the custody of the sheriff!"

Jonas collapsed back into his chair, his father burying his face in his hands behind him.

Judge Martinez turned the pages of the security transcript, her face setting into a mask of pure, judicial disgust.

"Mr. Hart," the judge said, looking down at him with utter contempt, "you left twenty-month-old triplets in a commercial convention hotel lobby because their physical presence threatened your fraudulent marketing narrative. You then proceeded to stage a public spectacle on social media branding the mother of your children as mentally incapacitated, solely to protect an illegal asset transfer for which you are currently facing grand jury indictment."

She signed the orders before her with aggressive, sweeping strokes of her pen.

"The court finds that Mr. Jonas Hart exhibits profound narcissistic disregard for the welfare of his minor children. Sole legal custody and sole physical custody of Poppy, Willa, and Ezra Hart are awarded exclusively to the mother, Mila Hart."

A soft, shuddering breath escaped my lips. Marcus squeezed my hand.

"Mr. Hart will be permitted two hours of supervised visitation every other Saturday at an approved state family service facility," Judge Martinez continued. "This visitation is strictly contingent on the completion of a comprehensive psychological evaluation and clean drug-and-alcohol screenings. Furthermore, pursuant to the forensic audit revealing the fraudulent transfer of marital capital into the offshore Belize account, Mr. Hart’s equity claim on any pre-marital or marital IP is declared null and void under the doctrine of unclean hands."

Judge Martinez looked directly at Jonas.

"You tried to erase this woman from her life’s work, Mr. Hart. Instead, you have successfully erased yourself from hers. Court is adjourned."

The gavel struck.

I stood up, turning my back on Jonas Hart forever.
