Chapter 10 - Happily Ever After

The autumn air had turned crisp and golden by the time Marcus and I hosted our wedding celebration at a private estate overlooking the rolling vineyards of southwestern Michigan.
There were no toxic in-laws demanding service, no fraudulent loans hidden in the dark, and no expectations of quiet subservience. There were only seventy of our closest friends, our most trusted colleagues, and family members who loved us not for what we could provide, but for who we were.
Rachel Morgan stood beside me at the altar as my maid of honor, looking impossibly chic in a floor-length emerald silk gown, holding my bouquet with a triumphant grin that practically screamed, I told you so.
When Marcus and I stood before the officiant exchanging our vows, our promises weren't built on silent sacrifice or unequal compromises. We vowed to be partners in every sense of the word—to protect each other's dreams, respect each other's boundaries, and celebrate each other's victories without hesitation or insecurity.
“Do you, Claire, take this man to be your lawful wedded husband?” the officiant asked gently, his voice carrying clearly across the quiet vineyard lawn.
I looked into Marcus’s eyes, seeing a future filled with laughter, ambition, mutual respect, and boundless love.
“I do,” I said clearly, my voice ringing out with absolute certainty.
When Marcus slipped the platinum band onto my finger and leaned in to kiss me, the applause from the gathered guests erupted into a joyful, roaring celebration that echoed across the sunlit valley.
Later that evening, as the stars came out to blanket the rural sky in a thick tapestry of silver light, we stood together on the stone terrace of the estate, looking out over the moonlit vineyards.
Marcus wrapped his arms around my waist from behind, resting his chin on my shoulder as we watched our friends laughing and dancing inside the glowing glass pavilion.
“Mrs. Vance,” Marcus whispered playfully into my ear, testing out my hyphenated professional and personal surname. “How does it sound?”
I leaned back against him, closing my eyes with a deep, unshakeable sense of peace and profound joy.

“It sounds,” I whispered, smiling out into the quiet night, “like happily ever after.”
And for the first time in my life, every single letter of it was entirely true.
