Chapter 14 - THE SOCCER CHAMPIONSHIP

November arrived with crisp morning frosts and sunny, bright afternoons.
The local youth soccer league season was coming to an end, and Caleb’s team—the Red Hawks—had made it to the regional championship game.
I sat in the portable lawn chairs near the fifty-yard line, bundled in a heavy scarf, holding a thermos of hot cocoa. James stood right at the sideline boundary, wearing his dark military fatigue jacket, acting as the assistant coach. He walked along the line, giving clear, calm directions to the kids as they ran up and down the field.
“Keep your spacing, boys!” James’s voice boomed across the field, clear and encouraging. “Talk to each other! You’re a unit!”
Caleb was playing center midfield. He looked tiny in his oversized red jersey, but his legs moved like lightning. With three minutes left on the clock and the score tied 1-1, Caleb intercepted a pass near the center line.
He didn't panic. He looked up, saw an opening on the left wing, and executed a perfect crossover dribble—the exact move James had practiced with him in the garage for months.
He took three fast strides toward the penalty box and struck the ball with the top of his laces.
The ball soared through the air, curving past the goalie’s reaching hands, and hit the back of the net with a crisp SNAP.
The sideline erupted!
“YES!” James yelled, throwing his arms in the air, a rare, uninhibited grin bursting across his face.
Caleb turned, his face lit up with sheer ecstasy, and sprinted straight toward the sideline. He didn't stop at the bench—he ran straight into James’s waiting arms. James lifted him high off the ground, spinning him around while the rest of the team piled on in a chaotic, laughing celebration.

I stood by the lawn chairs, clapping until my hands burned, tears of joy streaming down my face.
Watching my son—who had once cowered under his uncle’s cruel hand—now soaring high above the ground in his father’s arms, celebrated, loved, and victorious, was the greatest victory I had ever witnessed.
