Chapter 9 - The Princess of Lakeside Manor

The night of the charity gala arrived on a crisp Saturday evening.
Lakeside Manor was illuminated with thousands of twinkling white fairy lights. The grand stone driveway was lined with sleek cars, and guests dressed in elegant black-tie attire walked through the soaring glass doors of the main entrance.
Sarah looked stunning in a deep emerald green evening gown, her dark hair pinned back elegantly.
And Sophie—now six and a half—was floating on cloud nine. She wore a sparkling lavender ballgown with layers of soft tulle, complete with her silver-and-pink metal tiara resting proudly on her neatly curled hair. She held my hand tightly as we walked into the grand ballroom, her small eyes wide with wonder as she took in the massive crystal chandeliers and the majestic floral displays.
As we entered, David Henderson, the General Manager of Lakeside Manor, immediately spotted us and walked over with a broad, welcoming smile.
"Mark! Sarah! And the beautiful Princess Sophie!" David greeted us warmly, dropping to one knee to bow respectfully to my daughter. "Welcome back to Lakeside Manor, Your Royal Highness."
Sophie giggled behind her hand, blushing brightly. "Thank you, Mr. David!"
"Follow me, please," David said, standing up and gesturing toward the head banquet table near the center of the grand ballroom. "Mr. Vance is waiting for you."
We walked through the bustling crowd of business leaders, city officials, and local figures. Arthur Vance stood near the stage, conversing with his daughter, Alexis. When Arthur saw us approaching, his face lit up with a warm, genuine smile.
Alexis Vance—a poised, beautiful woman in her late twenties—stepped forward, looking directly at Sophie. There was no bitterness in Alexis's eyes, only kindness.
"You must be Sophie," Alexis said gently, leaning down to meet my daughter's gaze. "I’ve heard so much about you."
"Are you a real princess?" Sophie asked innocently, admiring Alexis’s elegant silver gown.
Alexis laughed softly, shaking her head. "No, sweetie. But I know for a fact that you are."
Arthur Vance stepped over, shaking my hand with a firm, respectful grip. "Mark, thank you for coming. You look fantastic."
"Thank you for inviting us, Arthur," I replied. "This is a magnificent event."
"Before we begin the charity auction," Arthur announced, raising his glass slightly, "there’s someone who needs to be recognized."
The soft ambient music in the ballroom began to fade, replaced by a gentle, enchanting orchestral melody playing over the sound system. The lights in the ballroom dimmed slightly, spotlighting the far entrance of the catering hall.
The double doors swung open.
Four uniformed pastry chefs walked out, pushing a massive, silver rolling cart. Sitting on top of the cart was the most breathtaking cake I had ever seen in my life.
It was a four-tier masterpiece, frosted in delicate pastel pink and silver, detailed with hand-carved sugar flowers, cascading pearls, and glowing fairy lights built into the foundation. And sitting at the very top of the highest tier was a hand-blown crystal glass crown that caught the light of the chandeliers, sparkling like a diamond.
The crowd of two hundred guests began to clap enthusiastically.
Sophie gasped, her hands flying to her mouth, her eyes opening wide in absolute awe. "Daddy... look!"
David Henderson stepped up to the microphone on the stage, his voice echoing warmly through the room.
"Good evening, ladies and gentlemen," David said into the mic. "Six months ago, Lakeside Manor failed to protect a very special young lady’s birthday celebration. Tonight, with the help of Mr. Arthur Vance and our master pastry team, we are making things right. This evening’s master cake is dedicated to our guest of honor—Miss Sophie Miller!"
The applause swelled into a thunderous ovation.

Sophie looked up at me, tears of pure joy glistening in her bright brown eyes. "Daddy... is that cake for me?"
"Yes, sweet pea," I whispered, feeling a lump form in my throat as I squeezed her little hand. "That cake is all yours."
