Chapter 8 - The Collapsing Foundation

The audio recording hung in the air like a physical blow.

Arthur Sterling slowly pushed his chair back from the table, the legs scraping against the floor with a harsh, grating sound. Several other senior partners from Sam’s firm exchanged dark, disapproving glances, shaking their heads in quiet disbelief.

Sam’s face went from purple to a sickly, ghostly ash gray. He staggered backward, his knees knocking against a chair, before collapsing heavily into it as if his legs could no longer support his weight. He looked up at me, his dark eyes wide and hollow, devoid of any defense, any bravado, any corporate authority.

"Rach... please," Sam whispered, his voice cracking miserably. "It... it's not what it sounds like. Let me explain—"

"Explain what, Sam?" I asked, my voice ringing out with terrifying clarity across the room. "Explain the twenty-five thousand dollar wire transfer from our joint savings account to Vanessa's new apartment? Or explain the draft property deeds hiding in your desktop files?"

Vanessa spun around, her frosting-matted hair sticking to her cheeks, her ice-blue eyes flashing with sudden panic as she stared at Sam. "You told me you had everything handled! You said your wife was already out of the picture!"

"Shut up, Vanessa!" Sam roared, burying his face in his hands as the full magnitude of his exposure crashed down upon him.

Patricia stood motionless beside the ruined cakes. The emerald silk gown that had symbolised her unassailable social dominance now clung to her like a wet shroud, dripping chocolate and pink icing onto the imported carpet. The impenetrable armor of her matriarchal pride had been shattered into a million jagged pieces.

But the recording hadn't finished playing yet.

As the room held its collective breath, the phone speaker continued to broadcast Patricia’s harsh, unyielding voice into the silence:

“And don't bother making a scene when you find out about the house in Back Bay, Rachel. Samuel has already signed the preliminary transfer papers. Vanessa is moving back into her rightful place. You were never anything more than a convenient placeholder while he rebuilt his portfolio.”
