Chapter 19 - The Desperate Endgame

Chloe looked completely unhinged. Her expensive blonde hair was tangled and matted with dirt, her designer blouse torn at the shoulder, and her eyes wide, bloodshot, and manic. She wasn't holding a luxury handbag anymore; she was clutching a heavy leather briefcase against her chest like a shield.

"You think you won, don't you?" she hissed, her voice echoing hollowly up from the subterranean shaft. "You think because Mom and Dad are locked up in some federal holding facility that the game is over? You're just a stupid, ungrateful little pawn, Clara!"

Marcus took a step forward, raising the cast-iron skillet defensively. "Get out of this house right now, Chloe, or I swear to God I'll call the police and have you dragged out in handcuffs just like your parents."

Chloe let out a shrill, hysterical laugh that made my skin crawl. "The police? Marcus, you absolute idiot. Do you know who owns the police precinct in this county? Do you know who funded the sheriff's reelection campaign last year? The Association of Family Trustees owns this entire town from the dirt up!"

She hauled herself up out of the hole, her legs scrambling against the edge of the wood until she stood panting in our pantry. She slammed the leather briefcase down onto our kitchen counter with a loud, metallic thud.

"What is that?" I demanded, stepping out from behind Marcus, my fear momentarily overridden by a cold, searing fury. "What have you been doing under our house, Chloe?"

"Living," she snarled, wiping a streak of black grime across her cheek. "Waiting for the right moment to reclaim what belongs to the Miller family. Do you have any idea what's inside this case, Clara? It's the master ledger. Every politician, every judge, every high-ranking official who took bribes from our father to keep our offshore accounts invisible. Judge Vance? He’s the head of the board. He sentenced Mom and Dad not because they were guilty, but to *protect* the syndicate from leaking further!"

My mind spun. It all clicked into place with terrifying clarity. The trial wasn't justice; it was damage control. My parents were sacrificed by their own partners to tie off loose ends. And Chloe had been left behind to salvage the master files before the property was sold to us.

"And you thought you could just squat in our basement and steal it back?" I asked, my voice deadly calm.

"I didn't squat," Chloe sneered, reaching into her jacket pocket. "I was sent to secure it. And if I can't take it back..." Her hand pulled out a small, sleek black device with a glowing red LED light. A remote detonator. "...no one can."

The red light blinked *slowly. Once. Twice.*

"Gas lines run directly underneath this kitchen," Chloe whispered, a terrifying, manic smile spreading across her ruined face. "One click, and this entire house goes up in flames. Your kids, you, Marcus—all of it. Just a tragic gas leak in a suburban home."

Marcus tensed, calculating the distance between himself and Chloe, but she held the detonator high, her thumb hovering directly over the pulsing red button.
