Chapter 19 - The Tide Turns

Julian’s face went completely bloodless. The tactical confidence vanished in an instant, replaced by panicked realization as the thunderous thrum of federal tactical units fast-roping onto the roof echoed through the dilapidated structure.
“You bitch,” Julian snarled, lunging forward to grab me by the collar.
I didn't flinch. Years of rebuilding my life from the ashes had taught me how to take a hit and how to strike back with devastating precision. As he lunged, I pivoted on my heel, bringing the heavy metal flashlight down hard across his wrist with the full force of my shoulder rotation.
*Crack.*
Julian screamed, dropping the pistol as the bone fractured under the impact. Before he could recover, I drove my heel directly into his shin, sending him crashing backward onto the damp concrete floor.
Heavy tactical boots thundered down the basement stairs a second later as Marcus Vance, leading a heavily armed team of federal marshals, burst into the room with weapons drawn.
“Clear!” Marcus shouted, his eyes darting across the room before locking onto me standing unharmed over a writhing, groaning Julian Vance. Marcus lowered his weapon, letting out a long, shuddering breath of pure relief. “Damn it, Emily. I told you to let corporate security handle the field reconnaissance.”
“And miss all the family drama?” I replied smoothly, adjusting the cuffs of my jacket and stepping over Julian’s sprawling form as federal agents slapped steel handcuffs onto his wrists.
Marcus walked over, extending a thick manila evidence bag containing Elena Vance’s Moleskine notebook, which he had scooped up from the drafting table. “Federal judges in Manhattan just signed off on the nationwide asset freeze against Vanguard Holdings. Every single offshore account linked to the Sterling syndicate is locked down permanently. It’s over, Emily. Truly over this time.”
I looked down at Julian as federal agents hauled him to his feet and dragged him toward the exit. He glared at me with pure, venomous hatred, his mouth twisted into a snarl.
“You think you’ve won the whole board, Emily,” Julian spat out as they pushed him past the threshold. “Vanguard was just a subsidiary. The people who actually own this city... they don't use guns or shell companies. They write the laws you live by. They’ll be waiting for you.”

I watched him disappear into the blinding morning light as the helicopter lifted off the rocky cliffside. I felt no fear—only a profound, unyielding sense of absolute mastery.
