Chapter 6 - The Emergency Family Summit

By Monday afternoon, the shockwaves of Brooke’s firing had torn through my family like a category-five hurricane.

My phone rang at 2:00 PM. This time, it wasn't Brooke or my mother—it was my father. I swiped to answer and placed it on speaker, setting it down calmly on the coffee table.

"Maya!" my father’s voice boomed through the speaker, frantic, furious, and trembling with panic. "What in God's name have you done?!"

"Hello, Dad," I said evenly. "I'm doing well, thank you for asking. How is your afternoon?"

"Don't play games with me!" he roared, his voice cracking. "Brooke just came home crying hysterically! She lost her job! Her career is completely destroyed! She said it’s all because of Graham, and she claims you put him up to it!"

"I didn't have to put him up to anything," I replied, my voice calm and ice-cold. "Graham has eyes, Dad. He watched Brooke poison me with walnut oil, and then he watched you film me while I was suffocating and unable to breathe. In the real world, adults face consequences when they try to kill people."

"It was a joke!" my mother’s voice suddenly chimed in, shouting from the background on speakerphone. She sounded hysterical, her usual polished veneer completely shredded. "You always take things too seriously, Maya! You had to ruin everything just because you wanted to play the victim! Now your sister’s life is ruined, and you’re sitting there smugly!"

"My life was literally on the line, Mom," I said, the venom finally slipping into my tone. "And you watched me choke. You told me I was embarrassing you. If Brooke’s life is ruined, she has nobody to blame except herself—and you, for letting her get away with it for thirty years."

"We are your parents!" my father bellowed. "Family comes first, no matter what! You don't air our dirty laundry to corporate executives! You need to call Graham right now, tell him you lied, and get your sister her job back!"

"No," I said quietly.

"Excuse me?" my father sputtered.

"I said no," I repeated, enunciating every single word. "I am done covering for you. I am done pretending your abuse is normal family dysfunction. If you ever contact me again—if you ever show up at my door, or send me another message blaming me for Brooke's consequences—I am taking the video Dad recorded, along with my hospital records, straight to the police department to file criminal charges for reckless endangerment and assault. Do we understand each other?"

Silence dropped over the line—a heavy, stunned silence so thick you could cut it with a knife. They had spent three decades assuming I would always fold, always apologize, and always absorb their cruelty to keep the peace.

They finally realized the game had changed.

Without waiting for their reply, I tapped the red button and hung up the phone.
