Chapter 15 - The Dawn of a New Era

The rain had finally cleared, leaving behind a crisp, washed Columbus evening where the setting sun painted the sky in brilliant shades of amber, violet, and deep cobalt.

The front steps of the Harrison-Harmon Foundation were quiet, bathed in the warm, welcoming glow of the architectural lighting we had installed when we first took over the building. Inside, the staff had gone home for the evening, leaving behind the soft, rhythmic hum of the research servers downstairs—servers that now housed not only my father’s original, uncorrupted genetic data, but also the permanent, encrypted archives of an open-source medical library accessible to doctors and researchers across the globe.

I stood on the second-floor balcony, leaning my forearms against the wrought-iron railing while breathing in the cool, sweet scent of wet earth and spring blossoms.

Behind me, the sliding glass door clicked open softly. Footsteps approached, steady and unhurried, followed by the familiar warmth of Daniel’s arms wrapping around my waist. He rested his chin gently on my shoulder, looking out toward the glittering lights of the city skyline in the distance.

“The federal prosecutor’s office just filed the final indictments,” Daniel murmured, his lips brushing against my temple. “Kyle and Diane are being held without bail pending a joint federal trial for corporate espionage, obstruction of justice, and conspiracy. The DOJ internal affairs division has already initiated warrants for the Apex executives in Zurich. Their entire North American network has been frozen.”

I closed my eyes, letting out a long, shuddering breath I felt like I had been holding for three agonizing years. The phantom weight that had lived in my chest since the day of the kitchen attack—the constant, grinding fear that the other shoe was about to drop, that the monsters would find another way back through the door—finally evaporated into the evening air.

“It’s really over, isn't it?” I whispered.

“It’s over,” Daniel confirmed, his arms tightening around me. “They can never hurt us again.”

A soft patter of footsteps echoed from the hardwood hallway behind the balcony. We turned to look.

Maya stood in the doorway, wearing her favorite pink pajamas with little silver stars, holding a battered stuffed rabbit in one hand and rubbing her sleepy eyes with the other. She looked up at us, blinking her dark, curious eyes against the fading twilight.

“Mommy? Daddy?” her small, sweet voice drifted across the room. “Can we go see the stars now?”

I smiled, a deep, radiant warmth spreading through my chest that chased away every lingering shadow of the past. I stepped away from the railing and walked over, dropping down to one knee to scoop my daughter up into my arms, burying my face in her soft hair as she wrapped her tiny arms tightly around my neck.

“We can see all the stars you want, sweetheart,” I whispered, kissing her forehead.

May you like

Daniel walked over, wrapping his arms around both of us, pulling us close in a circle of warmth, safety, and unbreakable love. Together, we walked out onto the balcony, looking up at the vast, infinite expanse of the night sky—where every star burned bright, clear, and entirely free.
