Chapter 17 - The Unforeseen Audit

Two weeks after the legal confrontation at *The Obsidian Grille*, the dust began to settle into a new, unfamiliar rhythm of absolute peace. The forensic accountant, true to his word, delivered the final, comprehensive dossier summarizing eight years of financial extraction. The total amount skimmed, inflated, and embezzled by Chloe and Clara’s shell corporation exceeded one hundred and twelve thousand dollars across multiple family accounts.
Luke and I sat at the kitchen island on a Tuesday morning, reviewing the final recovery wire transfer confirmation from our bank. The funds—every single cent of the principal, plus legal fees and court-ordered interest—had been successfully deposited back into our private holding account.
"It’s really over," Luke said, leaning back in his chair and running a hand through his hair. "The accounts are secured. The joint family trust has been dissolved and split into individual estates, completely cutting off any centralized control. Mom has officially retired from her self-appointed position as the family matriarch of logistics."
"And how is she handling retirement?" I asked, sipping my coffee.
"From what Richard tells me, she’s spending most of her time re-watching old soap operas and refusing to answer calls from relatives who are suddenly realizing they were funding her country club dues," Luke chuckled softly, though there was a trace of melancholy in his voice. It isn't easy watching a parent implode through their own greed and arrogance, even when they brought every single consequence upon themselves.
My phone chimed on the counter. I glanced down, expecting another routine email from our attorney's office or a notification from the school district about the upcoming spring science fair. Instead, the screen displayed an incoming email from an unfamiliar domain: *[email protected]*.
Subject: *URGENT: Notice of Administrative Review of Neighborhood Common Fund Discrepancies.*
I frowned, tapping the notification to open the message.
*Dear Resident,*
*As part of the routine post-audit review initiated following the dissolution of Clara & Co. Solutions LLC, the new interim board of the Suburban Homeowners Association has discovered several anomalous ledger entries associated with common area maintenance fees originating from your property between the years 2018 and 2023.*
*Please be advised that your household account currently reflects an outstanding administrative surcharge balance of $4,850, purportedly allocated for emergency landscaping and common wall repairs managed by the previous neighborhood treasurer, Chloe Sterling.*
I stared at the screen, the words blurring slightly as a cold wave of realization washed over me.
"Luke," I said, my voice dropping an octave. "Look at this."
Luke turned his chair around, leaning over my shoulder to read the email. His expression hardened instantly, the calm relaxation of the past week evaporating in a fraction of a second.
"Another phantom fee," Luke growled, his knuckles turning white as he gripped the edge of the counter. "Chloe didn't just steal from our personal family accounts. She used her position as the unauthorized treasurer of the neighborhood association to funnel fake maintenance debts onto our property deed, hoping that if we ever sold the house or refinanced, we’d automatically pay the balance without checking her fabricated work orders."
"And because the new HOA board is auditing everything she touched, they think we actually owe this money," I added, my mind racing through the legal implications. "If we don't contest this immediately with the forensic documentation we just compiled, it’s going to hit our property title as a lien."
Luke reached for his phone, his jaw set in a grim, unyielding line. "We’re not paying a single dime. And we’re not just contesting it quietly with the board."
"What do you mean?" I asked, looking up at him.
May you like
"I mean," Luke said, his eyes flashing with cold determination, "it’s time to take this to the entire neighborhood. Chloe thought she could hide her financial wreckage behind closed doors and polite neighborhood gossip. Let’s see how she likes it when the entire community reads the unedited forensic audit report at the upcoming quarterly HOA town hall meeting next Monday night."
