Chapter 19 - The Summer of Our Own

Summer arrived with long, golden days filled with sunshine, weekend camping trips, and endless hours of coding, designing, and prototyping in our garage laboratory.
We didn't attend the annual extended family summer reunion at my parents' lake house.
When the invitation arrived via a group text message in early June, I politely declined on behalf of our family, citing a busy project schedule. There was no argument, no screaming match, and no guilt trip. My parents had finally accepted that we operated on our own terms now.
Instead, the three of us packed our camping gear and spent a glorious week exploring the rugged coastline of the Pacific Northwest.
We hiked through ancient redwood forests, roasted marshmallows over open campfires under starlit skies, and watched sea otters play in the crashing waves of the Pacific Ocean.
One evening, as we sat on a cliffside overlooking the ocean while the sun dipped below the horizon in a brilliant display of crimson and gold, Olivia leaned her head against my shoulder.
“Mom,” she whispered softly, watching the colors fade across the water.
“Yes, sweetie?”
“I’m really glad we walked out of that house on Christmas.”
I wrapped my arm around her, feeling the steady, strong rhythm of her heartbeat against mine.
“So am I, sweetheart,” I murmured, kissing her forehead as the evening breeze rustled the pine trees around us. “So am I.”

We had traded a lifetime of walking on eggshells for a future built on unshakeable self-respect. We had traded hollow family obligations for genuine, unconditional love.
And as I looked out across the endless expanse of the ocean, I knew with absolute certainty that our story was only just beginning.
