Chapter 6 - The Digital Trap

The conference room on the fourteenth floor of the Halloway & Associates law firm overlooked the glittering skyline of downtown Austin. The morning sun bounced off the glass skyscrapers, but inside, the atmosphere was thick with intense concentration.

At the center of the mahogany conference table sat Attorney Jonathan Halloway—a sharp-eyed senior partner with silver hair and a razor-sharp reputation—along with a forensic cyber-accountant named Marcus, whose dual monitors were currently covered in complex transaction trees, cascading wire paths, and cryptocurrency wallet addresses.

Mateo, Valeria, and I sat on the opposite side of the table. Valeria had spent the last two hours quietly explaining every conversation she had overheard between Carmen and Julian over the past six months, filling in the crucial blanks that the bank statements couldn't show.

—Well, Mr. Vance, your daughter’s foresight with that flash drive was nothing short of a miracle, —Marcus said, spinning his laptop around so we could all see a highlighted cluster of bank nodes. —The data on this drive gave us direct administrative access to the backend of C&V Lifestyle Consulting’s primary merchant account in the Cayman Islands. And more importantly... it linked Julian Vance’s offshore accounts directly to a series of secondary wallets currently freezing in Zurich.

—Can we recover the funds? —Mateo asked, leaning forward eagerly, his hands gripping the edge of the table. —My business lines of credit are currently in default, and the bank is breathing down my neck. If we don't clear the suspension by Friday, the restaurant supply warehouse goes into receivership.

—We can do better than recover them, Mateo, —Attorney Halloway said smoothly, lacing his fingers together on the desk. —Because Julian panicked and attempted a bulk international wire transfer to a cryptocurrency exchange yesterday afternoon—right after Carmen was arrested—he triggered an automated anti-money laundering flag with the Swiss Financial Market Supervisory Authority. The accounts have been placed under a freeze order by international magistrates.

I crossed my arms, feeling a profound sense of vindication washing over me. —So the Swiss authorities have frozen Julian’s assets?

—Precisely, —Marcus nodded, tapping a key on his keyboard. —And because those funds were traced directly back to your mother’s irrevocable estate trust and your designated educational accounts through forged power-of-attorney documents, the U.S. Federal District Court can issue an emergency writ of restitution. We can legally repatriate every single dollar back to domestic jurisdiction within seventy-two hours.

Valeria let out a ragged sigh of relief, slumping back in her chair and burying her face in her hands. —Does that mean... does that mean my college fund is safe too? Can I still go to school?

I looked across the table at my stepsister. Despite everything Carmen had done, Valeria was still just eighteen, caught in the crossfire of her mother’s malignant greed. I reached across the table and placed my hand gently over hers.

—Your fund will be restored, Val, —I said quietly. —We’re all going to college. That’s what our mothers wanted—both of them.

Mateo swallowed hard, blinking back sudden tears as he looked between us. —I’m so sorry, girls. For everything. I was so blind, so eager to believe that everything was fine, that I let a parasite destroy our family from the inside out. I don't deserve either of you.

—You’re going to make it right, Dad, —I said firmly, turning my attention back to Attorney Halloway. —What’s our next move regarding Carmen’s criminal arraignment this afternoon?

Halloway’s expression hardened into a professional mask. —The Travis County District Attorney’s office is pressing charges on three counts of felony identity theft, two counts of grand larceny, and one count of federal wire fraud via interstate commerce. Given the documentation we’ve provided, her defense attorney won't even attempt bail; the flight risk with her brother in Zurich is simply too high.

—And the house? —Mateo asked. —The mortgage defaults Carmen triggered?

—Completely nullified under the unexecuted will provisions and the fraud-vitiates-all doctrine, —Halloway assured him with a reassuring smile. —The bank has already agreed to stay foreclosure proceedings once our injunction is filed this afternoon. Your home is safe, Mateo.

I stood up, buttoning my blazer as Marcus gathered the physical printouts into a fresh manila folder.

—Then let’s go down to the courthouse, —I said, my voice steady and resolute. —It’s time to close the loop on C&V Lifestyle Consulting once and for all.
