Chapter 16 - The Unannounced Visitor

Emma stood in the doorway of the executive suite, looking smaller than she had on the sunlit Chicago porch days earlier. She wore a simple beige trench coat, her hair pulled back into a loose ponytail, completely devoid of the high-fashion styling and glittering jewelry that had defined her public persona.
For a moment, neither woman spoke. The silence in the expansive office stretched, thick and fragile, charged with years of shared history, bitter rivalry, and the lingering scars of a wedding day gone horribly wrong.
Michael slowly stood up from his chair, his posture guarding Rachel instinctively. His eyes narrowed slightly as he looked at Emma. "What are you doing here, Emma? This is a private office."
Emma held up both hands in a gesture of absolute surrender, her eyes darting nervously between Michael and Rachel. "I... I didn't come to make trouble. I promise. I know security downstairs tried to stop me, but I told them I needed to see my sister."
Rachel looked at her sister for a long, quiet moment. She felt no spike of adrenaline, no defensive anger, and no bitter satisfaction. There was only a profound, surreal clarity.
"Let her speak, Michael," Rachel said softly, gesturing for her husband to step back. Michael hesitated for a second before nodding, remaining close by the desk.
Rachel stood up from the executive chair, walking slowly around the desk until she was standing a few feet from her sister. "You bypassed corporate security to come all the way up to the forty-second floor, Emma. People don't do that just to say hello."
Emma swallowed hard, looking down at the plush wool carpet before finally meeting Rachel’s eyes. Her lower lip trembled just a fraction. "Julian called me."
Rachel’s eyebrows arched slightly. "Julian?"
"He’s panicking," Emma said, her voice shaking slightly. "He lost his position on the board. The SEC is investigating his offshore accounts. He came to my apartment this morning, demanding that I help him spin a story to the press. He wanted me to go on social media—to bring up the wedding photos again, to claim that you manipulated the audit to execute a hostile takeover."
Rachel listened quietly, her expression impassive. "And what did you tell him?"
Emma took a deep, shuddering breath. A tear slipped down her cheek, catching the office light before she quickly brushed it away with the back of her hand. "I told him to go to hell."
Rachel blinked, genuinely surprised.
"For years," Emma continued, her voice cracking with suppressed emotion, "I thought that by tearing you down, by exposing your scars and making everyone look at the worst day of your life, it would somehow elevate me. I thought if I proved you were flawed, broken, and unlovable, it would make my own emptiness feel less painful."
May you like
She looked straight into Rachel’s eyes, her gaze raw and unfiltered. "When Michael stood up at the wedding and told the world why you had those scars—when he looked at you like you were the only real thing in a room full of ghosts—it broke something in my brain. It took me a long time to realize that the person I hated most wasn't you, Rachel. It was myself."
The silence in the office deepened, heavy with a weight that no corporate document or architectural blueprint could ever measure.
