Chapter 22 - TRAPPED IN THE LION'S DEN

The iron gates of the Vance estate locked with a resounding metallic thud that echoed across the mist-shrouded valley. Julian Vance cursed violently, slamming his gloved fist against the driver's side window of his unmarked SUV. The headlights had died completely, leaving him stranded in a labyrinth of towering oaks and pitch-black gravel paths. He checked his phone—zero signal. The old woman's high-end property wasn't just a mansion; it was a digital fortress designed to swallow intruders whole.

"Old witch thinks she can lock me out," Julian muttered, his breath pluming in the freezing night air. He reached into his trench coat, pulling out a heavy wire-cutting tool and a military-grade scrambler device. If the cameras were operational, he needed to blind the control center before the private security detail descended upon him.

Little did Julian know, the private security detail wasn't coming from the outside—they were already inside, monitoring every step he took from the reinforced panic room beneath the East Wing. Marcus Vance stood before a wall of high-definition monitors, watching Julian fumble with the gate controls on camera four. He glanced over at Martha, who sat calmly in an ergonomic leather chair, sipping black coffee as if she were watching a late-night movie.

"Shall we drop the exterior grid entirely, Mrs. Vance?" Marcus asked, his hand hovering over a master breaker switch. "Trap him between the second courtyard and the greenhouse. Give him a taste of the maze."

Martha stared at the screen, her gaze lingering on the jagged scar running down Julian’s left cheek. "No, Marcus. Let him reach the greenhouse. That's where Arthur kept his most toxic specimens. Let’s see how brave my dear brother-in-law is when he realizes the family legacy isn't gold—it's poison."

Outside, Julian finally managed to pry open the side service door leading into the grand botanical greenhouse attached to the back of the mansion. The glass structure was a dense jungle of overgrown ferns, thorny vines, and exotic night-blooming flowers that gave off a sickly, sweet aroma in the dark. He slipped inside, closing the door softly behind him. The air was humid and suffocatingly warm, a stark contrast to the freezing chill outside.

"Martha!" Julian hissed, his boots crunching quietly on the gravel floor as he navigated the dark aisles. "I know you're playing games! Your precious children are drowning in debt, and you're sitting up here playing queen! The trust fund is empty, Martha! They drained it all on the Harbor Point project! If you don't sign over the reserve accounts tonight, the creditors won't just take the house—they'll take everything!"

Martha paused, her coffee cup halfway to her lips as she heard his words echoing faintly through the estate's hidden acoustic sensors. The Harbor Point project. That was Thomas and Victoria's pet real estate venture—the one they had sworn up and down was a guaranteed goldmine when they pressured her into liquidating her last remaining stock portfolio three months ago. They had promised her a penthouse suite and eternal gratitude. Instead, they had walked right into a financial trap set by corporate raiders, and now Julian was their desperate messenger.

A cold, humorless smile touched the corners of Martha's mouth. Her children hadn't just forgotten her; they had gambled away their entire inheritance on a rigged board, and now the bill had come due at her front door.
