Chapter 5 - The Marshals at the Gates

By Tuesday afternoon, Vance Manor was in a state of absolute, unmitigated chaos.
The grand limestone driveway, usually pristine and silent, was blocked by three flatbed commercial tow trucks. Men in fluorescent yellow vests were walking casually across the manicured lawns, chalking the tires of Victoria’s Range Rover, Richard’s vintage Porsche 911, and the two corporate Mercedes sedans assigned to Eleanor.
"Get your filthy hands off that vehicle!" Victoria shrieked, running down the stone steps in her silk slippers, her blonde hair unbrushed, her face devoid of makeup. "That is private property! Richard! Call the sheriff! Call the governor!"
Her husband, Richard—a man whose entire career consisted of sitting on non-profit boards and playing squash—stood on the porch looking like a corpse in a tailored suit. He held a stack of legal documents that had just been handed to him by a Westchester County Sheriff’s Deputy.
"Victoria... shut up," Richard croaked, his voice cracking.
"What did you say to me?!" she whipped around, her eyes wild.
"Shut up!" Richard yelled, his hands trembling violently as he thrust the papers toward her. "The leases... they weren't in our name! None of them were! The cars belong to Aegis Fleet Management LLC. The accounts were terminated at midnight on Sunday! The financing company reported them as unauthorized possessions. They're repossessing everything!"
"What are you talking about?!" Eleanor marched out, wearing a heavy wool coat over her nightgown, her eyes bloodshot from a sleepless night of frantic, fruitless phone calls. "We own those cars! The family trust owns those cars!"
The Sheriff’s Deputy, a burly man named Miller who had tolerated the Vance family’s snobbery for twenty years, tipped his hat coldly.
"Mrs. Vance, according to the state registry, the Valerian Trust was completely defunded forty-eight hours ago. The master entity that held the titles is Aegis Sovereign Capital out of Manhattan. They have an expedited court order signed by the Southern District. We’re here to ensure the collateral is recovered without a breach of the peace. If you interfere with the tow operators, I will place you in handcuffs."
"Handcuffs?!" Eleanor staggered backward, catching herself on the stone balustrade. "I am Eleanor Vance! My father built this town!"
"And your father isn't on the paperwork, ma'am," Deputy Miller replied flatly. "Hook 'em up, boys."
The heavy mechanical whine of the hydraulic winches filled the crisp autumn air. One by one, the luxury fleet was dragged up the steel ramps, metal chains clanking like the chains of Jacob Marley's ghost.
Inside the manor, the horror was escalating at breakneck speed.
The two live-in housekeepers and the head chef, Jean, had already packed their bags. They were waiting in the grand foyer, their arms crossed, demanding their back pay.
"Madame Eleanor," Jean announced, his voice devoid of his usual culinary deference. "The payroll deposit failed this morning. My agency says our contracts are void. We are leaving."
"You can't leave!" Eleanor wailed, her aristocratic dignity disintegrating into raw, frantic panic. "The Delancey dinner is on Friday! Who is going to prepare the duck?!"
"Cook it yourself," Jean spat, picking up his rolling suitcase. "We haven't been paid for October. Your agency account is empty."
The heavy front oak doors slammed shut behind them, the sound echoing through the cavernous, sixty-room mansion.
Upstairs, Victoria was tearing through her mahogany desk, ripping open envelopes, frantically trying to log into the online portal for the Valerian Endowment. Every time she clicked *SUBMIT*, the screen flashed the same chilling, merciless message:
`ACCESS DENIED. ENTITY LIQUIDATED. CONTACT SOLE FIDUCIARY.`
"Richard!" she screamed down the winding staircase. "Who is the fiduciary?! Who has been signing the checks?!"
Richard staggered into the foyer, holding a glass of cheap bourbon he’d found in the basement storage. "I don't know! Father set it up with Vance & Sterling forty years ago! It was always managed through a blind family office! We never asked because the money was always just *there*!"
"Well, find out!" Victoria shrieked, her voice reaching a pitch that made the crystal chandelier vibrate. "The school called! Mason and Hunter’s tuition check bounced! The headmaster said if the sixty-thousand-dollar semester fee isn't wired by noon tomorrow, the boys will be expelled!"
Just then, the iron gates at the end of the long driveway groaned open.
Eleanor rushed to the window, hope flaring in her chest for a fleeting second. "Is it the lawyers? Is it the bank correcting the error?"
It was not the lawyers.
A black Ford Crown Victoria rolled up the driveway, followed by two white utility vans marked *CONSOLIDATED EDISON* and *WESTCHESTER WATER AUTHORITY*.
Two process servers stepped out of the Crown Victoria, wearing matching dark suits and carrying thick manila envelopes. They bypassed the repossession trucks and walked purposefully up the front steps.
They didn't bother to ring the bell. They taped a large, neon-yellow placard directly over the antique brass door knocker, followed by a thick sheaf of legal summonses.
Eleanor ripped the door open, her face twisted in rage. "What is this trash?!"
The process server didn't even pause. "Eleanor Vance? You’ve been served. Notice of Intent to Foreclose on Senior Secured Debt. You have seventy-two hours to vacate the premises or satisfy the outstanding balance of sixty-four million, two hundred thousand dollars held by Aegis Sovereign Capital."
He turned and walked away.
Eleanor looked down at the neon-yellow notice. Bold, black letters burned into her retinas:
`NOTICE OF ACCELERATED FORECLOSURE AND ASSET SEIZURE`
`DEBTOR: THE ESTATE OF VANCE`
`CREDITOR: AEGIS SOVEREIGN CAPITAL LLC`
`CURE AMOUNT: $64,218,904.12`
`FAILURE TO REMIT WILL RESULT IN IMMEDIATE SHERIFF'S EVICTION.`
The paper slipped from Eleanor’s trembling fingers, fluttering down onto the cold marble floor.
"Sixty-four million...?" she whispered, her chest heaving, the room tilting violently around her. "We... we don't have sixty-four million dollars. We don't have sixty-four thousand dollars!"
Victoria grabbed the paper, her eyes scanning the bottom of the page until they hit the signature line of the legal representative.
*Marcus Sterling, Lead Counsel for Aegis Sovereign Capital.*

"Sterling..." Victoria breathed, her fingernails digging into the paper. "Vance & Sterling! It's the old family firm! Mother, get your coat! We’re going to Manhattan right now!"
