Chapter 6 - The Public Smear Campaign

By eight o’clock the following morning, Karen had already fired her first missile.

I was woken up by a frantic call from my closest friend, Rachel, who ran an interior design agency in the city.

"Sarah! Have you seen Facebook? Have you checked your phone?!" Rachel yelled the second I picked up. "Karen has completely lost her mind! She is blasting you everywhere!"

My stomach plummeted. "What did she do?"

"Go look at the Oakridge Community Forum and her personal page. She’s tagging everyone in your professional network!"

I quickly loaded the social media apps on my tablet. My jaw clenched as Karen’s public post filled the screen. It already had over four hundred likes, dozens of shocked comments, and fifty shares:

> *"Heartbroken doesn't even begin to describe today. As many of you know, our family holds Thanksgiving sacred. But yesterday, our home was invaded by toxic, violent narcissism. My sister-in-law, Sarah, had an unprovoked psychological breakdown at our dining table. When my sweet daughter Chloe politely asked to share a drawing pad, Sarah aggressively attacked me, screamed profanities in front of the children, and physically dragged her poor daughter Emma out into the freezing cold to spite our family.*

>

> *My brother Daniel is completely devastated by his wife’s unstable behavior. We are currently working with legal counsel and family services to ensure little Emma is placed in a safe, loving environment away from this erratic woman. Please pray for our family during this painful time. Narcissistic abuse is real, and it hides behind quiet faces. #FamilyFirst #ProtectTheChildren #Heartbroken"*

Accompanying the post was an old photograph of Karen hugging Emma at a birthday party, looking like the picture of saintly maternal devotion, alongside a blurry picture of the spilled red wine on the dining room floor—captioned: *'The aftermath of Sarah’s violent outburst.'*

The comments below were a cesspool of outrage from local country club socialites, PTA mothers, and business associates:

*— "Oh my god, Karen! That’s horrifying! I always knew there was something off about that girl!"*

*— "Daniel must be suffering so much! She’s trying to alienate him from his own daughter!"*

*— "Call CPS immediately! An unstable mother is a danger to everyone!"*

Before I could even process the audacity of the post, my phone rang.

It was Daniel.

This time, I answered. I didn't say a word. I just listened to the heavy, panicked breathing on the other end.

"Sarah," Daniel began, his voice strained, desperate, and sickeningly patronizing. "I see you’ve probably seen Karen’s post. Look... she was angry. She acted on emotion. You know how passionate she is."

"She is publicly accusing me of being an abusive, violent mother, Daniel," I said, my voice dead and emotionless. "She is defaming my character to every client and colleague I have in this city."

"And you threatened to file a police report against my sister!" Daniel shot back, his temper flaring. "Do you have any idea what an arrest record would do to Greg’s hedge fund? Do you know what a scandal would do to my startup? The venture capital firm is doing their final due diligence this week! If a child abuse investigation hits the press, they will pull their ten-million-dollar funding round!"

"Then maybe you shouldn't have allowed your sister to beat your daughter across the face, Daniel."

"SHE DIDN'T BEAT HER!" Daniel screamed into the phone, losing all composure. "She slapped her! It was a disciplinary tap! Parents discipline children all the time! You are blowing this completely out of proportion because of your sick vendetta against my family!"

"A disciplinary tap?" I repeated slowly. "Emma has a soft tissue contusion on her zygomatic arch and deep fingerprint hematomas on her bicep. The pediatrician documented it all. CPS is opening an investigation this morning."

A chilling silence fell over the line. Daniel’s breath hitched. When he spoke again, the fake warmth was entirely gone. His voice was cold, transactional, and threatening.

"Listen to me very carefully, Sarah," Daniel warned. "My father is an old man whose brain is turning to mush. His little living trust stunt won't hold up ten minutes in probate court. Karen and Greg have hired the most aggressive family litigation firm in the state. If you don't take down those reports, sign a non-disclosure agreement, and issue a public retraction on Facebook apologizing to Karen by noon... I will file for sole emergency custody of Emma. I will claim you have severe postpartum psychosis and unmanaged bipolar disorder. I will drag you through the mud until you don't have a penny or a child left. Do you understand me?"

I felt no fear. No sadness. Only a profound, liberating clarity.

"I'll see you at noon, Daniel," I said quietly.

"Good. I'm glad you're coming to your senses—"

"At the Harrison Group headquarters," I cut him off. "Make sure Karen and Greg are there. And make sure your fancy lawyers bring plenty of pens."

May you like

I hung up the phone before he could reply.
