Chapter 10 - The Sterling Legacy

One year later.
The Grand Ballroom of the Plaza Hotel was a sea of light, music, and opulence.
The annual Autumn Heritage Foundation Gala was in full swing—the very same event that Victoria Davenport had planned to use as her coronation twelve months earlier. Over five hundred of the country’s most prominent philanthropists, diplomats, business leaders, and artists filled the gilded hall.
The gossip columns had long since moved on from the Davenport scandal. The family was thoroughly ruined: Helena Davenport was currently serving a thirty-year sentence at the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury; Victoria had taken a plea deal for twelve years at Bedford Hills; Harrison Davenport had been stripped of his judicial robes and disbarred in disgrace, living in seclusion in a modest rental in New Jersey.
Tonight, the city had gathered for something entirely different.
Tonight was the formal inaugural launch of the *Katherine & Martha Sterling Foundation for Youth Empowerment*.
At the top of the grand marble staircase, the master of ceremonies tapped his microphone.
"Ladies and gentlemen," the announcer’s voice echoed through the vast ballroom, silencing the orchestra and the murmur of conversation. "Please welcome your hosts for the evening: Mr. Alexander Sterling, and the Chairwoman of the Sterling Foundation, Miss Sophia Sterling."
The double doors at the balcony landing opened.
Alexander walked out, looking every bit the towering titan of Wall Street in a bespoke midnight-black tuxedo. But tonight, his eyes were bright, his smile warm and easy.
On his arm walked Sofia.
A collective gasp swept through the crowd.
Sofia was breathtaking. She wore an off-the-shoulder gown of emerald-green silk faille, tailored with architectural precision that framed her slender, elegant figure. Her dark hair was styled in an intricate, flowing crown of soft waves, accented with delicate diamond hairpins. Her skin was radiant, the scar on her cheekbone completely healed into a faint, silver line that looked like a warrior’s badge of honor.
And at her throat, resting upon her skin like a star fallen from the heavens, was the *Heart of Navarre*.
The massive uncut Colombian emerald glowed under the crystal chandeliers with an intense, hypnotic green light, surrounded by a constellation of brilliant diamonds.
The applause started slowly at first, then swelled into a thunderous, standing ovation that vibrated through the historic ballroom.
Billionaires, senators, and socialites stood on their feet, clapping furiously, looking up at the young woman who had risen from the ashes of servitude to become one of the most powerful and philanthropic figures in the nation.
Sofia looked down at the sea of faces.
She did not feel intimidated. She did not feel the phantom sting of a slap. She did not feel the urge to look at the floor.
She met the eyes of the crowd with calm, sovereign dignity.
Alexander leaned down, whispering softly into her ear. "How do you feel, little sister?"
Sofia smiled—a radiant, unbreakable smile that reached her gray eyes.
She reached up, her fingers resting lightly against the cool, ancient surface of the emerald locket, feeling the secret catch beneath the gold setting—the catch that held her mother’s picture, and her true name.

"I feel like a Sterling," Sofia said.
Alexander laughed, his chest swelling with pride, and together, brother and sister descended the grand staircase into the light, stepping forward to claim the future they had won together.
