Chapter 4 - The Court of Public Opinion

Stepping out from behind the service partition felt like walking onto a Broadway stage right in the middle of a collapsing set.
The interior of Grounds for Ambition was no longer a peaceful evening coffee shop; it was the epicenter of a localized media frenzy. The remaining dinner customers had crowded near the front windows, their phones raised high, recording every movement. Outside on the rain-slicked sidewalk, a spontaneous crowd of supporters—prompted by local TikTok reposts of the livestream—had gathered under umbrellas, holding up makeshift signs scribbled on paper napkins: SUPPORT LOCAL WOMEN, NOT CHEATING HUSBANDS and WHERE IS JUNIPER’S COFFEE? NONE.
Standing right in the center of it all, clipboard in hand and a look of stunned fascination on her face, was Evelyn Vance (no relation), the senior dining editor for Seattle Food & Life and arguably the most feared restaurant critic in the Pacific Northwest.
As Eloisa stepped into the light of the main counter, the murmurs among the crowd died down instantly. Every eye locked onto her.
Eloisa took a deep breath, squared her shoulders, and smoothed down her sage-green apron one last time. There was no hiding now. The narrative had escaped her control, but instead of letting it crush her, she decided to grab the steering wheel with both hands.
Evelyn stepped forward, lowering her clipboard. Her sharp, intelligent eyes softened with genuine empathy. "Eloisa... sweetie. I was sitting at table four when my phone started blowing up with screen recordings from your business account. Are you alright?"
Eloisa offered a tight, composed smile—not a weak, broken smile, but the smile of a woman who had just survived a shipwreck and washed ashore with a spear in her hand.
"I’ve been better, Evelyn," Eloisa replied, her voice carrying clearly across the quietened café acoustics. "But the coffee is still fresh, and the equipment is fully functional."
A collective ripple of astonished laughter echoed through the room. Evelyn’s eyebrows shot up in profound respect, a slow, appreciative grin spreading across the critic’s face.
"My God, woman," Evelyn murmured, stepping closer. "Most people would be locked in the back crying right now. You’re standing here ready to take orders."
"Crying doesn't pay the equipment lease, Evelyn," Eloisa said evenly, turning to face the battery of camera phones pointed directly at her from both inside and outside the glass. She raised her voice so everyone could hear. "To everyone watching here, online, and out on the street tonight: thank you for coming out to support Grounds for Ambition. This café was built on a dream, hundreds of hours of hard work, and a genuine passion for craft coffee. That hasn't changed, even if some of the personnel behind the scenes proved to be... defective."
Inside the supply hallway, hidden just out of sight, Trevor listened to every word, his hands clenched into tight fists of impotent fury. He knew right then that his marriage was over, his reputation was incinerated, and his social standing in Seattle’s elite business community was hanging by a thread.
Evelyn pulled out her notepad, clicking her pen with purpose. "So, Eloisa... what happens next? Trevor Vance holds fifty-one percent of the corporate entity. Legally speaking, how do you plan to salvage your life and your business from under a partner who just proved himself to be a complete fraud?"
Eloisa didn't hesitate for a single second. The answer had crystallized in her mind the moment she saw the live red light blinking on the iPad.
"Trevor may own fifty-one percent of the paper, Evelyn," Eloisa said, her eyes flashing with a fierce, unwavering light that made every camera flash pop in synchronization. "But I own the recipe, I own the brand loyalty, I own the lease in my personal name as primary guarantor, and as of tonight... I own the entire narrative."
She paused, looking directly into the nearest smartphone camera streaming live to thousands of eager viewers.

"And as for the future? Tomorrow morning, my divorce lawyer is filing an emergency asset-freeze injunction, followed by a hostile buyout petition. And Grounds for Ambition? We aren't closing. We're just getting started."
The café erupted into deafening, thunderous applause. Outside on the sidewalk, the crowd began to cheer, chanting her name over the sound of the Seattle rain.
