Chapter 5 - The Secret Meeting

By late afternoon, the initial shock had transformed into cold, defensive resolve.
Claire had filed an immediate counter-petition for an emergency protective order, citing harassment and parental coercion, effectively freezing Connie’s ex-parte filing until a formal evidentiary hearing could be held in front of Judge Marcus Halloway on Monday morning.
We were safe for seventy-two hours.
Elena secured a short-term corporate apartment under an alias. At 8:00 PM, my phone buzzed. A text from an unknown number:
*It’s Josh. I'm using Alison's burner phone. Mom took mine. Please, Laura. Let me see Frankie. Just ten minutes. I'm alone.*
I looked at Frankie, who was resting peacefully in my lap after nursing. Every instinct screamed to ignore him. He had betrayed us. He had signed the paper while my blood was still on the delivery room floor.
"Claire," I called out. "Josh wants to meet."
Claire walked into the living area, drying her hands on a dish towel. "If he comes, it happens here, with Elena and me in the next room, and every syllable recorded. Georgia is a one-party consent state. Let's see whose side your husband is really on."
Thirty minutes later, a soft knock sounded at the apartment door. Elena let Josh in.
He looked ruined. The swagger he usually carried as Connie Mitchell’s golden-boy son was stripped away. His eyes were bloodshot, his shirt wrinkled, his hands shaking.
The moment he saw Frankie in the bassinet, his knees buckled. He fell to his knees beside the crib, sobbing into his hands.
"I didn't know about the trust, Laura," he choked out, his voice muffled by tears. "I swear on my life, I didn't know about Grandma's trust. Mom told me the electrical supply company was going under. She said Dad had co-signed our business loans and they were calling the debt. She said the agreement was just collateral for a family loan."
"You signed our daughter away as *collateral*?" I said, standing over him, my voice devoid of mercy.
Josh looked up, tears streaming down his face. "I was terrified! I've spent twenty-eight years trying to make her happy, and every time I fail, she threatens to take everything away. The house, the business, my standing... I was weak. I was an idiot. But when she called the police today, when she told them you were crazy... I threw up in the sink. I realized what she was doing."
"Then do something about it," Claire’s voice cut through the room like a razor. She stepped out from the hallway, holding a legal pad.
Josh scrambled to his feet, startled. "Who are you?"
"I’m the woman who is going to keep your wife and child safe from your mother," Claire said bluntly. "Unless you choose to stand in my way. You have two choices, Mr. Mitchell. You can go back to Connie, testify against your wife on Monday, and spend the rest of your life knowing you sold your daughter for your mother’s approval. Or you can sign an affidavit of coercion right now, testify against your mother under oath, and maybe—just maybe—have a shred of dignity left."
Josh swallowed hard. He looked at Frankie, then at me.

"Give me the pen," Josh whispered.
