Chapter 5 - A New Road Ahead

The afternoon sun cast a golden glow across the Westbridge skyline as Elijah stepped out of the corporate headquarters building. Instead of taking the private town car waiting at the curb, he walked over to the bike rack near the entrance.

He unlocked the scratched blue bicycle, swung his leg over the frame, and adjusted the strap of his messenger bag. The familiar weight of the pedals beneath his boots felt grounding, a constant reminder of where he had come from and the resilience it took to climb back to the top.

As he coasted down the avenue toward the park, the cool autumn wind brushed against his face. For the first time in six years, there was no anger in his chest, no lingering shadow of betrayal, and no desire for petty vengeance. The past was settled, the accounts were balanced, and the road ahead stretched out wide and open before him.

He pedaled past a crowded bus stop on the corner. Standing near the shelter, wearing a faded raincoat with her head bowed against the chilly wind, was Courtney. She looked up as the bicycle rolled past, her eyes widening in sudden, disbelieving recognition.

She took a half-step forward, her lips parting as if to call out his name. But Elijah didn’t slow down. He didn’t stop to gloat, and he didn’t look back. He simply kept his eyes fixed on the horizon, shifting gears smoothly as he rode onward into the bright afternoon light.
