Chapter 33 - The Ghost of the Captain’s Ledger

The words hit me like a physical blow to the chest, momentarily knocking the wind entirely out of my lungs. My father? Retired Captain Hugh Alden—the man who had spent forty years preaching rigid military honor, unyielding integrity, and absolute devotion to the United States Navy—was tied to the counterfeit parts syndicate?

"Repeat that, Admiral," I said, my voice dropping an octave as the entire reactor compartment fell into a terrifying, suffocating silence. Every eye in Maneuvering locked onto me.

"You heard me correctly, Commander," Admiral Carrow’s voice replied over the crackling comms link, cold and devoid of emotional hesitation. "NCIS special agents executed a federal search warrant on Pacific Defense Logistics in Honolulu thirty minutes ago. Among the encrypted offshore bank records seized was a signed procurement authorization bearing your father’s digital military clearance signature, approving the fast-track installation of unverified civilian components across three naval shipyards dating back four years. He didn't just ignore your service record, Alex... he was knee-deep in the logistics network that put your life at risk inside the *Vicksburg* engine room."

The revelation sent a sickening wave of nausea rolling through my stomach. The fire that had scarred my back, the months in the burn unit, the agony of recovery—it wasn't just a tragic accident born of combat stress. It was the direct result of a corrupt, cost-cutting supply chain enabled by the very man who had spent five years treating me like a family disgrace for surviving it.

"Commander Alden?" Master Chief Thomas’s voice broke through my swirling thoughts, his weathered hand resting firmly on my shoulder. "What are your orders?"

I straightened my posture, pushing down the tidal wave of personal betrayal and replacing it with the absolute, unyielding coldness of a naval officer executing her duty. "Secure the reactor compartment immediately, Captain Cole," I ordered, turning to face the stunned submarine commander. "Drain the primary cooling loops and replace every single civilian-sourced valve with mil-spec backups from the naval depot. Nobody leaves this base."

"And your father?" Commander Cole asked quietly, his expression filled with grim sympathy.

"My father," I said, my voice cutting like a steel blade through the submarine's recycled air, "is about to face a court-martial."

Twenty-four hours later, our transport aircraft touched down once again at Naval Station Norfolk under a heavy, overcast autumn sky. The storm clouds gathering over the Atlantic matched the dark, electric tension gripping the naval base. Master Chief Thomas and a heavily armed detachment of NCIS tactical agents flanked me as we marched directly toward the flag officer quarters where my father was currently restricted to quarters under military arrest.
